Mazda’s new rotary engine will be presented on January 13 at the 2023 Brussels Motor Show. It will debut in the propulsion system of the Mazda MX-30.
Rumors have long been swirling about the imminent arrival of Mazda’s rotary engine, a long-awaited return that has been delayed for a decade, though the wait is coming to an end. And it is that the Japanese company itself has confirmed that the new Mazda rotary engine is presented on January 13, coinciding with the Brussels Motor Show 2023.
As Mazda has announced, “at the 2023 Brussels Motor Show” “a new propulsion option for your Mazda MX-30” will be presented. This new mechanism will be “available in the European market from the spring of the seventh year” and will be a solution never seen before in any of the models of the Japanese company.
Mazda’s new rotary engine unveiled on January 13
We are talking about a “plug-in hybrid engine” available in the MX-30 that “will have an electric generator powered by a newly developed rotary engine.” This confirms what many reports predicted months ago, the Wankel engine returns as a range extender, not the glorious engine that powered the Mazda RX-7.
A solution similar to that offered in its day by the BMW i3 REX, that is, an electric car with extended autonomy thanks to a gasoline engine that generates electricity to recharge the battery on the move. The difference with the product of the Bavarian firm is that in the MX-30 a newly developed rotary motor will be in charge of supplying this electrical energy.
It will be an electric car for use, since the rotary motor will not be attached to the wheels, so it will not generate movement, but electricity to recharge the battery. It is expected that the technical specifications of the electric SUV will not be altered in this new version, so it should continue to offer an electric motor with 107 kW (145 hp) of power and 270 Nm of torque.
The battery of the 100% electric version has a capacity of 35.5 kWh, although this element could have a different size in the new version with extended autonomy. It could also offer a greater range of autonomy per charge, since the standard MX-30 approves 200 kilometers.
We will know more details and all the features of the rotary-powered MX-30 in just a few days, when it is revealed in Brussels.
