Update (06/12/2022). We went to Nice (France) to see and test the new Citroën C5 Aircross 2022, which although it does not modify its chassis or range of engines at all, it does change its exterior appearance and has new prices. (01/12/2022) Citroën has just renewed its C-segment SUV, the C5 Aircross. We went to Paris to record and see firsthand what Citroën has modified in this SUV, changes that basically focus on its exterior and interior design. The objective has been to give it a more modern and current air, to maintain the good level of sales that it has in Europe.

Citroën has sold, since 2018, 260,000 units of this compact SUV, a good part in a plug-in hybrid version. The French brand has not modified the structure of the car, nor has it changed anything in its powertrain. Engines, chassis and transmissions are identical to the C5 Aircross that has been sold so far; but it has retouched the design of the car, both exterior and interior.

The new Citroën C5 Aircross arrives in 2022 with exterior and interior aesthetic changes, although the car is basically the same.

As you can see, the front is different. It is perceived as more vertical, with a more powerful image. The bumper is larger, and the grille is smaller; and is placed in a higher position.

The front air intakes have been placed more towards the ends, and a lower intake with a sportier style is included, with a slight splitter shape, in the style of the new Citroën C4 and C5 X.

The LED daytime running lights have a new graphic, they are larger and take on a greater role in the visual identity of the car seen from the front.

Another detail is that the Citroën logo does not link its two chevrons with the LED lights through a chrome strip, as in the previous C5 Aircross, but rather the logo has greater independence in the center of the grille, and is finished in black. piano.

The LED headlights are now darker and give a more discreet image, to indirectly accentuate the presence of the grille on this front.

The 18-inch wheels (19″ as an option) are also of a new design, more aerodynamic. And a new gloss black tone is included for the mirrors and the roof bars.

On the side, the characteristic C-shaped chrome frame is maintained, which starts from the C-pillar and surrounds the windows, thus highlighting the roof line. Also kept, as in the previous C5 Aircross, the airbumps or lower body protectors. But if that changes the design of the rear optics. Not its size, but the background of the optics has been darkened to give more presence to a new graphic of light, with more horizontal shapes.

The range offers a new color for the bodywork, Eclipse Blue, which has the peculiarity that it changes its hue depending on the angle at which the light falls. It goes from dark blue to black, depending on how you look at it.

New screen and better finishes

Inside, the most notable change is the inclusion of a new 10-inch digital screen, located in a higher position, as if floating. This screen gives the dashboard a more modern look and allows more direct access to information without taking your eyes off the road.

The vents now sit just below the screen, rather than on the sides of the screen, and are more horizontal in shape. The navigator is included as standard in the gasoline and diesel C5 Aircross, and from the Feel finish in the hybrid C5 Aircross. Both the digital instrument panel and the steering wheel do not change.

The seats are new, and derive from those mounted on the Citroën C4 and C5 X. They are, according to Citroën, more comfortable seats, with a softer more resistant to the passage of time and with the possibility of being ordered heated and cooled. New blue stitching is introduced, which is also replicated on the door panels and dashboard.

There are four new finishes for this interior: Wild Black, which combines black faux leather with blue stitching, Urban Black, with black faux leather and Alcantara; Metropolitan Black, which combines perforated leather with gray imitation leather. And the top of the range, Hype Black, which uses high quality leather with Nappa.

Some controls change on the console. The lever-type gear selector is gone and is replaced by a more integrated and simpler push-button type selector. In the same way, the dial-type driving mode selector is replaced by a new one, also of the push-button type. A new group of USB connectors and a wireless charger are added to this console.

The dashboard is finished in the center console and in its upper part with a material that imitates black leather.

Known Habitability

Both the rear seats and the trunk do not change at all. The C5 Aircross remains one of the few SUVs with three individual seats in the second row, which are also movable.

The trunk offers a minimum capacity of 580 liters or 720, if we move the seats in the second row, and a maximum capacity of 1,630 liters.

In the plug-in hybrid it is somewhat less: from 460 to 600 liters of minimum capacity.

In terms of chassis, as I mentioned, everything remains the same. The car maintains the characteristic comfort suspensions of the French brand, unique in the automobile sector for its ability to absorb irregularities. It is what Citroën calls suspensions with a “flying carpet” effect, due to the sensation they produce of floating over bumps in the asphalt. A suspension style that derives from those Citroën GS, CX or DS, and that has been transferred, with new technology, to the current range of the French brand.

The engines are also the same, and can be gasoline or diesel, both with 130 hp, or we can choose a plug-in hybrid drive, with 224 hp and with the possibility of driving in electric mode for 55 kilometers.

During the presentation in Nice (France) I was able to briefly drive the plug-in hybrid version, which I found powerful and very pleasant in its response. It is an excellent option for those who want an SUV to drive around the city and in which ride comfort is a prominent aspect. This Citroën benefits from a chassis with very soft setting suspensions, ideal for long road trips or family trips. The engine pulls well from low revs and picks up strongly throughout the rpm range. aided by electrification.

The only negative point, which could be improved, is the feel of the brake, typical of a plug-in hybrid with a regenerative braking system, in which the first run offers little bite. It’s a matter of getting used to it.

You see, the Citroën C5 Aircross maintains its technology and basic features, but now with a new image and more current equipment. The objective, as in any restyling or update, is to continue and improve, as much as possible, its good commercial success. Without major changes, without risking, the car now looks more current.
