As every month, on the second Tuesday of each month, Microsoft releases its new security patches, a series of updates that correct all the vulnerabilities detected in its systems and products. Although we are in the middle of summer, the company does not stop, and since a few hours ago the new security patches for Windows 10 and 11 have been available. These patches are also quite large.

This time, Microsoft has fixed a total of 139 vulnerabilities in all systems that are still supported by the company. This is one of the largest patch packages we have seen so far this year. And, in addition, several critical vulnerabilities in the system are fixed.

Let’s take a closer look at these patches.

July updates for Windows

These new security updates have reached Windows 10 version 22H2, as well as Windows 11 versions 22H2 and 23H2, in addition to the Server editions of the operating system.

  • Windows 10 22H2: 70 vulnerabilities have been fixed, 1 of them critical, 67 of important danger, and 2 of moderate danger.
  • Windows 11 22H2: 73 vulnerabilities have been fixed, 1 of them critical, 670 of important danger, and 2 of moderate danger.
  • Windows 11 23H2: 73 vulnerabilities have been fixed, 1 of them critical, 670 of important danger, and 2 of moderate danger.

As we can see, all Windows editions have a critical flaw fixed by these updates. This flaw is CVE-2024-38060, a very recent remote code execution vulnerability on systems found in the Windows system imaging component.

Update your PC

If you don’t want to take any chances, you should update your computer as soon as possible to protect yourself from these vulnerabilities. Especially from the critical security flaw we mentioned above. All versions of Windows that have automatic updates enabled will receive these patches without doing anything, and they will be installed on the PC as soon as the PC is restarted. Additionally, if you want, you can manually check for them from Windows Update to make sure they have been installed without any problems.

Likewise, if you have problems with Windows Update, there is also the possibility of downloading and installing the updates manually. We can do this from the following links:

Known bugs

Initially, these new updates should not cause too many problems for users. Or at least that is what Microsoft itself has indicated. However, if we review the known errors section of the company’s security bulletin, we can see that there are some problems that, although they are isolated cases, could put us in danger.

In the case of Windows 10, we may encounter the following problems:

  • After installing the update, it is impossible to change the profile picture. This is a bug with no solution for now.
  • Devices connected to Microsoft Connected Cache (MCC) can download apps or updates from the public Internet. There is no workaround for this at this time.
  • Desktop icons may become misplaced if Copilot is used on more than one monitor at the same time. This bug should now be fixed.
  • Copilot does not work if the taskbar is vertical. This is another bug that has already been fixed.

And, on the other hand, if we use Windows 11 we can find:

  • Enterprise edition users may experience issues when trying to upgrade from a Pro edition. This is an open issue, but Microsoft is looking into it.
  • After installing the update, users are unable to change their account profile picture (same as in Windows 10). This is a bug with no fix for now.

However, we do not rule out the possibility that new errors and problems related to these updates may appear in the coming hours.
