Eight years ago, Suzuki presented the prototype of a 588 cc parallel-twin engine, with a single overhead camshaft and a turbocharger. This bike was called the Recursion and, according to Suzuki, it was capable of delivering 100 hp.
In 2015 it returned to the fray with a new engine, also turbocharged, but this time 699 cc and double overhead camshaft, for which it did not offer performance figures. Everything seemed to indicate that it would equip a new range of motorcycles, but we did not know anything else until five years later, when the sketches of a new motorcycle powered by a parallel twin cylinder appeared.
Now, the Italians at motociclismo.it have obtained a photo of a Suzuki V-Strom 700 that mounts a parallel twin, driving on a mountain road.
What is most striking is that it mounts a parallel twin and not the well-known V2, a very reliable engine, but which must be around 25 years old.
Virtually all manufacturers are focusing their production on parallel twins. This type of engine is compact, lightweight and cheaper to produce than a V2.
From the rest that can be seen of the bike, it seems that the Full LED headlight of the V-Strom 1050 has been adopted. The chassis is no longer the classic double beam, but rather a tubular steel one. The swingarm is new invoice.
New cycle part
Regarding suspension, the new trail mounts an inverted fork instead of the conventional one of the current V-Strom 650. The rear suspension continues to use linkages.
The bike in the photo mounts 21” and 18” spoked rims, front and rear respectively. This could indicate that there will possibly be two versions, a more adventurous XT, and a more touring one, with 19” and 17” alloy wheels. Possibly we will also see a naked with this propellant.
With a performance that should be around 75 hp, this new Suzuki ¿V? The Strom 700 will rival the Yamaha Tracer 700 and Ténéré 700, the Aprilia Tuareg 660, as well as the future Transalp 750.
We would bet that the ignition of the twin will be with the crankshaft set at 270º, as is usual in this type of current engine, achieving a response and a sound similar to that of a V2.
When? In any case, we do not expect to see the ¿V? Strom before the spring of next year.
And the turbo?
We doubt that so many years of work with this engine in its turbocharged version remain on deaf ears. We do not rule out that later we will see a sports car with this turbocharged parallel twin, which can deliver between 125 and 140 hp.
