Orange will also sell electricity and gas and will attract its customers with savings on their fibre and mobile bills

The MasOrange group, which already has five electricity suppliers, is now adding a new electricity and gas offering to its Orange brand, with which it hopes to gain more than 600,000 customers in the coming years and become the second largest energy supplier in Spain, behind only Repsol. The company is thus seeking to strengthen its diversification and increase its profits outside the telecommunications sector as well.

This new offer will be open to customers of any company, although it will try to take advantage, initially, of Orange’s existing customer base. To do this, the orange brand will offer discounts to all those who combine their telephone or Internet rates with this electricity rate, which could mean a saving of up to 15% on the usual price of the electricity bill.

These electricity rates will have a fixed price of 0.11 euros per kilowatt hour (kWh), and Orange customers who sign up for them online will receive a 20 euro discount voucher for the first two months with this energy contract. In addition, the discounts that can be obtained will be cumulative for those who add second homes to the contract. The price of gas will also be fixed throughout the day, which will be updated every six months and will not be permanent.

The permanent discount that an Orange telephone customer will receive for also subscribing to electricity will be 6 euros per month on their telephone bill, in addition to a 3 euro per month discount on the mobile bill if they subscribe to a gas plan. In total, a discount of 9 euros per month if both services are subscribed.

These synergies when contracting mobile or fixed connections together with energy, which will translate into discounts for users, represent a “unique advantage in the market,” the company says. Part of this advantage also lies in the fact that these are “very competitive” fixed prices for electricity and gas, avoiding fluctuations in the market that could make the bill more expensive.

MasOrange Executives

With this proposal, MasOrange differentiates itself from other large telcos such as Vodafone or Telefónica, which do not offer these energy packs for the home.

Technological proposal

They also try to provide value to their customers in the form of simplicity, since their users will be able to control their energy consumption and telecommunications services from mobile applications and with simplified invoices. A simpler organization, while automatic discounts are applied.

A technological layer also comes into play, as, from a specific app for this energy plan, Orange introduces artificial intelligence tools with which customers can accurately predict what their energy consumption will be each month, and receive help to optimize use and reduce spending. This is an analysis of consumption based on artificial intelligence, from an app with which the group will provide added value to citizens concerned about fluctuating or complex energy bills.

This is in addition to a range of renewable energies, which will be made available to users to give them the opportunity to switch to this other form of sustainable consumption.

This new Energy service has been tested in a pilot test in 70 stores during the month of August, and will be officially launched this September.

Good figures in other marketing companies

This energy offer from Orange is added to those of other brands in the same group: MásMóvil (with MásMóvil Energía), Euskaltel, Yoigo (with EnergyGO), Pepephone (with Pepeenergyy) and Lucera also have their own electricity suppliers (only Euskaltel also offers gas).

The company had a rough patch in this business in 2022, due to the rise in energy prices caused by the war in Ukraine, which caused pauses in contracting. In 2023, they resumed marketing and have since seen their energy customer numbers grow. Specifically, MasOrange already has 220,000 energy customers (70,000 new users in 2024 alone), 45% more than in 2023, growth driven mainly by Euskaltel, but with the other brands also adding customers.

These figures encourage MasOrange to continue along this path, being the only teleco that persists in diversifying through energy services, after Vodafone closed its marketing company last May when it was acquired by Zegona.
