The presentation of the Polestar 3 has taken place in Denmark and has marked a very important moment for the Swedish brand.
Polestar’s revolution as an electric car brand is being felt in the industry. After a couple of great vehicles, the time has come to get into SUV territory with the new Polestar 3 that has been presented in Copenhagen, Denmark.
It is the first car that is going to be completely developed by the brand, on its own platform and with an enormous deployment of technical and design resources in teams full of brilliant minds. Thomas Ingenlath, CEO of Polestar, wanted to make this clear.
“The Polestar 3 represents what Polestar is and where we are going in terms of design and performance. In terms of luxury and technology, to advance what has already been done with the Polestar 1 and 2,” he said at the press conference.
So we have a historic sister brand to Volvo, a lot of talent and a promising future. The ingredients seem good, and the Polestar 3 has not left anyone indifferent in terms of the first impression. We tell you all about this luxury family car!
Polestar 3 Design
The company has wanted to innovate in this aspect and pay special attention to details, which I was able to discover together with the experts involved in the project while we scrutinized all the secrets of the car.
It is an electric SUV measuring 4,900 mm long, 2,120 mm wide and 1,614 mm high for the European market. Although pay attention to the weight: neither more nor less than 2,584 kg as a minimum. Largely the result of its vast battery system that we will talk about later.
Aesthetically it is beautiful. Plain and simple. However, when you get closer you discover even more curious details such as a spoiler on the hood and at the rear. Two elements that are combined with a pair of additional fins and a well-studied shape to eliminate unnecessary air vortices and increase the car’s drag coefficient index, which stands at 0.29 Cd.
There is no grill at the front. It all comes down to a clever part that houses a multitude of sensors and a lower air intake to cool its mechanics. Although perhaps, what is most striking are its headlights. Very Polestar-esque, of course: sharp, razor-sharp, and with 1.3 million independently controlled mirrors to deliver matrix lighting.
At the rear, in addition to the aforementioned spoiler, we find a very vertical gate with different level changes in geometry, where its optics united by a futuristic infinite light take on relevance. You already know that it is fashionable, and with this electric car it could not be missing.
If you take the opportunity to open the gate, you will find a trunk with a capacity of 484 liters that can be increased to 1,411 liters by knocking down the second row of seats. And to this we must add a second 32-liter front compartment, perfect for charging cables and the occasional small object.
Power, performance and autonomy
Let’s go for what interests many, bluntly. The Polestar 3 will have a dual motor configuration (front and rear) powered by a 111 kWh battery that will give the car in its standard version a power of 360 kW (482 hp) and 840 Nm of maximum torque together with an electric autonomy up to 610 kilometers.
‘Standard version’ because, as usual, a Performance package will also be available which will boost those figures to 380 kW (508 PS) and 910 Nm of torque. What will also influence the 0 to 100 km / h, which will go from 5.0 to 4.7 seconds with a fixed maximum speed of 210 km / h.
In this regard, the contrast with Volvo’s 180 km/h limitation became interesting and I couldn’t help asking Andreas Andreen, Product Manager and therefore in charge of part of the development of the Polestar 3.
“The limitation to 210 km/h has been made because our car is different from the Volvos. In terms of performance and safety, we are one step above and this allows us to reach that speed safely,” he replied to the question.
Of course, security is not lacking. Both at an active and passive level and through mechanical or software elements. First of all, we must highlight the front 400 mm perforated and ventilated discs together with 4-piston Brembo calipers and a 390 mm rear configuration with single-piston calipers.
Because stopping a 2.5-ton car is not easy, but a 50:50 weight distribution and adaptive double-chamber pneumatic suspension with active shock absorbers that will be able to modify parameters such as height or hardness every 5 centimeters of travel.
Once your battery runs out, the Polestar 3 will have the possibility of recharging itself in alternating current up to 11 kW or in direct current up to 250 kW. More than enough power, although perhaps an 800 V electrical architecture has been missing.
Security, technology and price
Polestar is synonymous with safety as is its parent, Volvo. In this area, the new electric SUV is loaded with ADAS systems and sensors that lay the foundations for the future of autonomous driving. This is the case of LiDAR, an advanced radar capable of scanning and monitoring a good section of the environment and that can be incorporated into Polestar 3 in mid-2023.
In total, five radars, five external cameras and 12 ultrasonic sensors will be managed by software and hardware from the Nvidia company, well known internationally for its chips and graphics cards for the computer industry, AI (artificial intelligence) or gaming.
Even the interior will have a monitoring of the passenger compartment to monitor the driver’s state of fatigue or even if he has left children or pets forgotten inside the vehicle, being able to react autonomously to this situation.
The entertainment system and the huge 14.5-inch multimedia screen with Google’s operating system (Android Automotive OS) will be controlled by a module by Qualcomm Technologies, another of the big names in computing technology at the level of smartphones and various miniaturized systems.
That will be the jewel in the crown of an interior that is committed to sustainable materials, a spartan and luxurious design (very Nordic, yes), but that does not dispense with classics such as animal leather, although it will not be a basic option and will bring a special certificate that ensures the life and care of the animals used to obtain it.
At this point and with the summary of the greatest capabilities and innovations presented in this new Polestar 3, it is time to talk about cost. Its price will start from 89,900 euros and it will present as main options the Performance Package for an additional 6,600 euros and the LiDAR with a price yet to be specified.
This new Polestar SUV can now be booked and configured on the brand’s website, and the first deliveries of the electric vehicles will begin in the second half of 2023, which will come with a second showroom in Madrid after the one that has already been opened. in Barcelona and with dozens of points in the Volvo Polestar network that will be the reference in after-sales services.
