The 2022 F1 Bahrain Grand Prix marks the premiere of the new technical regulations for the premier category of motorsport. With these rules, the first orchestrated by Liberty Media (owners of F1 since 2016), it is expected that the cars can fight each other and offer fans the show they have been asking for for many years.
Max Verstappen defends title after his spectacular victory in 2021 against seven-time F1 world champion Lewis Hamilton. In the pre-season tests, Red Bull proved to be one of the most reliable and fastest single-seaters, and for this reason it starts as the favorite for the new season. Mercedes, meanwhile, suffered after unveiling a radical new concept.
Another of the teams that is expected to be in the fight for victory is Ferrari, after having left very good feelings in the F1 tests. They refuse to say that they are favourites, but everything indicates that they will be very close to Red Bull. And Carlos Sainz can take advantage of that to fight for his first victory in the premier class.
On the other hand, Fernando Alonso starts “The Plan” with the Alpine A522, a single-seater that also surprised after taking a step forward in the Bahrain tests with respect to those in Barcelona. From Alpine they have already said that they see themselves in Q3, and then it will be necessary to see if they are to be the fourth, fifth or sixth (or worse) team. The grid is expected to be very even.
One of the words that has been talked about the most during the F1 tests in Barcelona and Bahrain has been the happy “Porpoising”, a pitching of the car that occurs after the introduction of ground effect and that some teams have managed to control more than others. We will see it this weekend!
Who we will not see on the track is Sebastian Vettel, who has tested positive for COVID-19 and will be replaced by Nico Hülkenberg at the wheel of the Aston Martin AMR22.
