Fiber optics is a technology that still has a lot to offer. The limit is unknown since more and more advances are produced that achieve more speed. One of those that has already reached the general public is XGSPON, which allows symmetrical 10 gigabyte connections (actually 8 Gbps). Yoigo announced that he was beginning to test the technology and now we know exactly where he is doing it.

In Spain we have two operators that lead the XGSPON segment. Whether because not all of them offer it to their customers or for other reasons, only Orange and Digi have this technology available on a commercial level. Orange Infinity is the pack from the French operator that allows you to enjoy this speed. For its part, PRO-DIGI fiber is Digi’s product that enables navigation at maximum speed.

In the case of Orange, it is offered in 1.5 million homes, while the Romanian operator’s coverage regarding XGSPON is broader. According to the latest figures published, it can be contracted in 7.5 million homes spread across the 38 provinces of our country.

XGSPON maximum speed fiber connection

The MásMóvil Group gets on the bandwagon

On September 19, the MásMóvil Group announced the deployment of XGSPON at 10 gigabytes. The technology known as XGS-PON (10-Gigabit Symmetrical Passive Optical Network) was going to be tested in several Spanish provinces. The yellows confirmed that Yoigo already had its connection available with up to 10 Gbps speed in the provinces of Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa.

At that time, the exact cities in which it could be contracted were not detailed. In addition, they promised to expand the technology to other areas of the country as soon as possible. Now, with the merger agreement with Orange (to create MásOrange), both companies will jointly offer this connection in several areas of the country.

In the financial report corresponding to the year 2023, the MásMóvil Group confirmed exactly the cities that have this technology. Specifically, the statement reads as follows:

Regarding the fixed network, in 2023 we launched a pilot on Oñati/Guipúzcoa and Foios/Valencia).

Let’s hope that, after closing the merger with Orange, they will regain control of XGSPON. Furthermore, it wouldn’t hurt if others, like Movistar, got their act together in this field that Digi dominates, to everyone’s surprise.
