Test VW ID.5, the electric SUV Coupé of the Germans

Tesla has long been roaming freely in the field of electric cars, brands like Volkswagen have become direct competitors and present alternatives for each of the models. The Tesla Model Y and the VW ID5 are declared rivals, but what is the best option if you think about your purchase?

We are going to analyze what each of the two offers to get rid of doubts.

Design

Neither of them is a prodigy in this aspect and both are limited to applying the design line that each manufacturer has chosen for its electric range to its format.

In the case of the Model Y, the features already seen in its siblings, such as the Model S or the Tesla Model 3, are very recognizable, with minimalism and clean surfaces predominating. Of course, it runs out of striking elements such as the gull-wing doors of the other SUV in the house, the Tesla Model X.

In the case of the Volkswagen, something very similar happens, with the coupe-cut SUV repeating the same face that the ID.3 and ID.4 already have. Of course, it has a little more punch for some bumpers in more detail and for the fact that the bodywork is two-tone.

Measures

They are two large models, but the Tesla is the one that stands out the most in this aspect and by far, both in total size and in terms of trunk capacity.

The American measures 4,751mm long, 1,921mm wide and 1,624mm tall, with a 2,890mm wheelbase. Its trunk covers 971 liters and reaches 2,158 liters with the seats folded down.

The German measures 4,599mm long, 1,852mm wide and 1,613mm tall, with a 2,766mm wheelbase. Its trunk has a capacity of 549 liters and with the rear seats folded down it increases to 1,561 litres.

Engines

Neither of the two models presents an excessively wide mechanical offer, with three engines in each case, although those of the Tesla have a more sporty vocation than those of the Volkswagen, integrated by options with a much more limited power.

The access Tesla Model Y only has a 204 hp rear motor, goes from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.9 seconds, has a maximum speed of 217 km/h, uses a 50 kWh capacity battery and registers a autonomy of 455 km/h.

Above is the Model Y Great Autonomy, which is already four-wheel drive, has two motors, delivers 351 CV of power, accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5 seconds, maintains the top speed of 217 km/h and thanks to its larger battery increases its range to 533 kilometers.

The Tesla Model Y Performance is the top of the range, with two motors, all-wheel drive, 480 hp, acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.7 seconds, 250 km/h top speed and a range of 514 kilometers.

As for the ID.5, its access version, called Pro, has only 174 hp, is rear-wheel drive, accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 10.4 seconds, has a top speed of 160 km/h, mounts a 77 kWh battery and homologates a range of 534 kilometers.

The intermediate, Pro Performance, goes up to 204 hp and maintains the rest of the elements, such as rear-wheel drive or the 77 kWh battery. Only improvement in acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h, which drops to 8.4 seconds, but maintains both has both the same maximum speed and autonomy.

Finally, the ID.5 GTX, top of the range that already uses two engines, has four-wheel drive, reaches 299 hp and 310 Nm, accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.3 seconds, has a top speed of 180 km/h, uses the same battery and approves a range of action of 480 kilometers.

Price

It’s hard to find a more even matchup in this regard. The Tesla Model Y starts at 51,200 euros and the Volkswagen ID.5 does the same at 51,110 euros. Thus, the price is not at all a determining factor and it is the rest of the characteristics that should tip the balance to one side or the other in the purchase intention.

Thus, the Model Y would be the recommended option for those who seek greater mechanical performance, like the more minimalist style and can forgive simpler and simpler interior finishes. The ID5 should prevail for those who want a vehicle that uses better materials and a higher overall quality feel.
