The nationalists want the entire city of Vigo to be a Low Emission Zone itself so that users stop using the car in favor of public transport.

We will all remember 2023 as the year in which ZBEs were launched in all municipalities with more than 50,000 inhabitants, a measure included in the Climate Change Law, approved in 2021. But, for some, it is not enough and they want more. This is the case of the BNG, which plans to convert all of Vigo into a Low Emission Zone.

According to La Voz de Galicia, the Galician nationalist party has proposed that the entire city of Vigo itself be a Low Emission Zone so that users stop using the car and favor the use of public transport and pedestrian traffic, in addition to bicycles and personal mobility vehicles.

As you know, since January 1, 2023, all municipalities with more than 50,000 inhabitants have already implemented a Low Emission Zone that restricts access to the most polluting vehicles. To enter them, it is necessary to have the DGT environmental badge.

The proposal has to do with the BNG’s rejection of the project of the mayor of Vigo, Abel Caballero, who announced four ZBE zones and, although the law requires the implementation of some of these areas, it has not yet been done.

Low-income owners of unlabeled vehicles will be able to access the LEZ

Xabier Pérez Igrexas, spokesman for the nationalist party and candidate for mayor, stated that “it is not a question of changing combustion cars for electric ones in some areas with prohibitions, but of reducing traffic in a whole of the city.”

Igrexas rejects Caballero’s project, which considers it a copy of Madrid Central, which discriminates and penalizes people based on their place of residence and income, since not everyone can afford an electric car, and affirms that there are more alternatives efficient.

Prioritize public transport and zero emissions

The nationalist candidate for mayor of Vigo calls for the reorganization and democratization of public space to give priority to pedestrian mobility, whether by bike or VMP, and public transport, over private vehicles.

For this, the Galician nationalists also consider it essential to improve urban public transport, updating the current map of lines that they consider obsolete, increasing frequencies, renewing the fleet with electric models and lowering fares.
