Europe proposes that the digital driving license be valid, something that the DGT already offers, which would allow the license to be renewed more easily.

Last week the European Commission presented a series of proposals that seek to modernize driving license rules, including the introduction of a digital driving license valid in all member countries of the European Union. Note that the DGT already offers this possibility through the miDGT mobile application.

“One of the directives adopted today will make the little piece of plastic history. In the not too distant future, your driver’s license will be on your phone or any other digital device, although you can request a physical version if you prefer,” said Adina Valean, European Union Commissioner for Transport.

“Especially for the younger generation, the digital license is a matter of personal convenience. The directive will also simplify and lighten the administrative burden involved in processing a physical license”, adds the commissioner.

In addition, another of the advantages contemplated by this measure is that citizens of countries that do not belong to the European Union with road safety standards comparable to those of the EU, will be able to change their driving license for one from the EU more quickly and simple.

In addition to the commitment to the digital driving license, the Commission has presented other proposals, such as that young people can take the test and start driving trucks and cars accompanied from the age of 17 to gain experience. However, it is also proposed to extend the novice driver period from 1 to 2 years.

On the other hand, driving tests for drivers would be updated to take into account the transition to electric cars, also trying to show how driving style has an impact on consumption and emissions from combustion vehicles.

All these proposals will now be considered by the European Parliament and the European Council for approval and entry into force in the future.
