At the great event that Cupra organized a few weeks ago, one of the surprises was the announcement of the Cupra Terramar. It was not given much hype because the protagonists of the day were others, but we are talking about a compact SUV that will arrive in 2024. It is the immediate future of the firm and will reach a very crowded segment: the 5 rivals of the Cupra Terramar.

Although it will coexist with the Cupra Ateca for a couple of years, then it will replace it completely. It has a more dynamic design than this, incorporates the firm’s new design identity and will have mechanical combustion and plug-in hybrid versions, these with up to 100 kilometers of electric autonomy.

It is not a huge amount of data, but it is enough to create a profile with the models that will be its main competitors in the market.

Audi Q3 Sportback

The first on the list is inside the house and is that both the Audi Q3 and its Sportback version are manufactured in Györ, Hungary, where the Terramar will be produced. The model of the brand with the four rings has a very dynamic design in this version and shares the premium position that Cupra is looking for.

The only “but” is that the Audi does not have electrified versions, but it does have a fairly wide range of engines and high powers, ranging from 150 to 245 hp.

Alfa Romeo Tonale

Another of the newcomers to the segment, the Alfa Romeo Tonale was born with the sporty and quality approach that characterizes the rest of the brand’s models. Since it is a novelty, by the time the Cupra Terramar arrives it will still be fresh and will be one of the main ones to take into account.

In addition, its range of engines is very varied, serving from an audience looking for an access mechanic (130 hp gasoline and diesel) to those who want more powerful options, which in their case are electrified: a 160 hp micro-hybrid alternative and a 275 hp plug-in hybrid.

hyundai tucson

The Hyundai Tucson is one step below both in positioning and sporty approach, but today it is the true benchmark among compact SUVs. Its risky aesthetic commitment has gone well, it is a real best seller and, in addition, it has in its mechanical offer blocks capable of living up to the hypothetical engines of the Terramar.

Pure and micro-hybrid thermal blocks, both diesel and gasoline, between 115 and 180 CV; a 230 hp self-recharging hybrid version and a 265 hp plug-in hybrid, all with manual and automatic transmissions, as well as front-wheel drive or integral drive systems. One of the most complete options in the segment.

BMW X2

Returning to the premium terrain, the BMW X2 is a compact “access” SUV with a more casual and jovial style than the rest of the German brand’s models, something that is in the same vein as Cupra, so from the point of view visual could stand up to him.

In addition, its offer of versions follows the same distribution that the Terramar will have: several combustion (136, 178 and 306 CV gasoline; 116, 150 and 190 CV diesel) and a plug-in hybrid (220 CV and 53 kilometers of electric autonomy ).

Lexus UX

The case of the Lexus UX is somewhat different from the other models on the list: yes, it is premium, and yes, it has the sporty image that characterizes the brand; but only the standard model is marketed in a 184 hp self-recharging hybrid version. It is an alternative to get the ECO label.

It is also available in a 100% electric version, but since the Cupra Terramar in principle will not be available with any similar version, we do not take it into account.
