The streaming industry is investing huge amounts of money to bring the best productions. In fact, the budget is already exceeding that of many feature films that are released on the big screen, although the revenue obtained by the digital sector is usually more reinforced by attracting a huge number of subscriptions. Specifically, Netflix, which is the company with the most users worldwide, has paid a million for a horror film that does not convince.
It was something that was coming and horror movie fans are already fed up with always receiving the same product. The specialized critics have spoken and Netflix is ​​already in the spotlight of overused original productions whose plot has already been reflected on countless occasions. But it is undoubtedly true that any novelty that the big N places in its catalog is equal to guaranteed success.
The latest example is La libertad, which is currently proclaimed as the most watched audiovisual work on the platform in more than 40 countries, including Spain. Currently, it has already surpassed 14.5 million views and 27.3 million hours watched, which is one of the most important debuts so far this year. However, the critics say the opposite, and that is that its story based on real events has not completely convinced the specialized media, which give it an extremely low rating.
One good turn and one bad turn for the Netflix blockbuster
As we have seen recently, the investment in films and series from the different streaming tools is overwhelming and has no limits. Without going any further, the spending by Amazon Prime Video on the series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is simply abysmal. More than 700 million euros of budget for a production that did not go down too well with the most die-hard fans of the Tolkien book saga, since its popularity was gradually losing weight due to invented plots that did not work.
The same thing has just happened with Netflix’s new horror film, The Liberation, which was hoping to become a hit, and so it has, as it leads the list of most-watched films in our country, but which, sooner or later, will lose fans. Everything indicates that its release has not been approved by professional critics as much as by other users, who give it a score of 32% and 47% respectively on the film portal Rotten Tomatoes.
Without a doubt, this was a tough setback that cost Netflix around 65 million euros for the acquisition of rights, after beating out such well-known distributors as Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and Miramax.
