What was Mick Schumacher doing at Mercedes?

The Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix left a surreal image that sparked laughter on social networks. Mick Schumacher, the Haas F1 driver, got lost in the Pit-Lane after getting out of his car and got confused in the box while trying to find his team’s garage. Mercedes recorded it and posted it on Instagram.

Don’t worry: it’s not about espionage, everything has a convincing explanation. Usually, the teams’ boxes are placed in the order of the Constructors’ World Ranking of the previous year, which allows the champion team to be at the beginning of the Pit-Lane, thus obtaining a certain advantage.

However, there are circuits where this is done differently due to the configuration of the Pit-Lane and, in order not to harm the champion, the order is changed. That’s what happened in Canada, where Mercedes went from first to last… and of course, Mick Schumacher went in there thinking he would find his team, as that’s usually where he sits.

“Usually, we are at the end of the Pit-Lane, but they changed the order this weekend. That causes terrible confusion,” Haas commented in the post where Mercedes published the video of Schumacher inside his box. “What’s going on? Mick Schumacher is in our garage,” says a member of the German team, as Toto Wolff looks confused and Lewis Hamilton stands next to him.

At the same time, the video shows how Mick tries to get out of the box quickly to get back to the right place and asks where to do it, heading towards the paddock through the back door of the garage.

Curiously, Mick entered a box in which his father competed between 2010 and 2012, in his second stage as a Mercedes driver. The seven-time German champion wore the star emblem during those seasons in which, although he did not achieve the expected results, he did manage to return to the podium (the last of his career) at the 2012 European GP.

The last Canadian GP was not particularly positive for Mick Schumacher, who despite qualifying in a good sixth position, was forced to leave when he had a chance to get his first points in the premier class.
