We are talking about the technology of the hydrogen car, a propulsion system still in an initial phase of its commercialization that is being postulated as a mobility solution that has the necessary powers to coexist with the electric vehicle in the future and as an alternative to engines. of combustion. For now, the supply of hydrogen models is very limited.

Despite this, in this article we want to review all the hydrogen cars for sale in Spain in 2023, a segment so limited that there are currently only two hydrogen cars available to buy now, and next year there will be none. At the moment, no other model with these characteristics confirmed to reach the Spanish market.

This is how the hydrogen car works

The basis for this propulsion system are three fundamental pillars: the hydrogen fuel cell, an electric motor and a battery. Hydrogen is used as an energy source, which is stored in specific pressurized tanks installed in the car, generally under the rear seats and the boot floor, which can be recharged in just 5 minutes.

The fuel cell uses hydrogen and oxygen from the atmosphere to, through a chemical reaction, convert it into electrical energy that is stored in the battery, which is similar in size to the one found in a hybrid car, or to feed the engine directly. electric. The only residue that is generated from this chemical reaction is valuable water that is expelled through the exhaust.

Therefore, a hydrogen car is an electric vehicle that, instead of plugging into the electricity grid to recharge its battery, obtains electricity through the use of hydrogen. This means that it is considered an “emissions-free” car and, therefore, it is categorized with the DGT environmental label 0 Emissions.
