However, synthetic fuel seems to be the third option that is beginning to be considered within the industry, an alternative fuel that could give the internal combustion engine a second chance and that is getting closer to being sold. To begin with, among the solutions presented by e-Fuel we find the fact that it is a carbon-neutral fuel. It is obtained by electrolysis using hydrogen and carbon dioxide that is absorbed from the atmosphere, so the emissions produced during the combustion of the fuel are offset by those obtained for its production.

In addition to the fact that it does not generate new polluting emissions, it is the most viable alternative to preserve internal combustion engines beyond the 2035 ban, the year from which new gasoline, diesel, gas and hybrid cars will not be sold in Europe. . At the moment, only electric and hydrogen cell vehicles will be allowed to be purchased.

Lastly, the third solution provided by e-Fuel synthetic fuel is that it is an ideal fuel for land, air and sea transport, where converting this type of vehicle to electric propulsion systems is an extremely complicated task. With e-Fuel, trucks, planes and ships will be able to continue operating with internal combustion engines.

However, synthetic fuel also poses a problem, mainly its price. And it is that the production plant, the chemical process for its manufacture and the cost of electricity will make obtaining synthetic fuel e-Fuel much more expensive. It is estimated that by the year 2030, this alternative fuel could have a price of between 3 and 4 euros per liter.
