What is Reddit?

Reddit is a social news website. Users can share experiences, stories, discoveries and more, and others can comment on them. Based on the ratings of users, the website sorts the news, so that the highest-rated topics automatically appear at the top. Reddit is thus a modern variant of a user forum.

What is a subreddit?

Within Reddit you will find various ‘subreddits’. These are separate pages about one subject, for example r/iphone and r/apple. You can subscribe to it so you can create your own front page, featuring only the topics that interest you.

Reddit on iPhone and iPad

The first step to using Reddit is to create an account. While you can view Reddit without logging in, we recommend creating an account because it also allows you to create your own front page with subreddits, leave ratings, and share your own links.

You can register via the (mobile) site of Reddit and it is quite simple. You provide a username and password, after which you enter the corresponding CAPTCHA code. An email address is optional. You can reset your password at a later time with your email address.

Reddit app on iPhone

If you want to use Reddit on iPhone and iPad, we recommend the official Reddit app. This was created after the acquisition of Alien Blue, a popular app made by an external developer. You can also opt for one of the excellent alternatives Apollo (see review) or Burst, although they are not updated that often anymore. Unfortunately, that also applies to Nano for Reddit, an app that lets you read the social news site on the Apple Watch.

Official Reddit app

You now have a Reddit account and have installed one of the apps. If you opt for the official Reddit app, you can indicate after logging in whether you want to receive notifications for posts that are of interest to you.

With the search function at the bottom of the screen you can look for interesting subreddits, such as r/iphone and r/applewatch. You can subscribe to such a subreddit, or browse posts from your favorite subreddits. You can also see what’s popular at the moment or post something yourself.

Reddit via the Apollo app

The Apollo app is created by a third-party developer and offers a variety of useful options and settings. The app has five sections at the bottom of the screen: Posts (all subreddits that you subscribe to or that you have set as favorites, Inbox, Account, Search and Settings. You can, for example, set a different app icon via the settings. This is only possible if you switch to the Pro version The nice thing about this app is that you decide how much you donate for the Pro version.

Reddit on the Apple Watch

Looking for a Reddit app for your Apple Watch? Then try Luna! This free app is well put together and lets you quickly scroll through forums and read comments. In our test, the app loads the information on forums quite quickly and the app works smoothly. You can currently search for forums by dictation and then immediately choose whether you want to see the trending posts or the new posts.
Luna for Reddit on Apple Watch

The app is currently not bursting with features, but the developer promises that that will change. Soon you will also be able to upvote, watch videos and view profiles. Other functions are not yet announced, but more is coming. This makes the app quite complete for your Apple Watch. Luna is free and contains no in-app purchases or ads.

Reddit via the (mobile) website

You can also visit Reddit via the (mobile) website. There you can subscribe to subreddits so that you get a personalized front page. You must of course be logged in with your Reddit account to do this. Pressing this will add the subreddit to your personalized front page. You must of course be logged into the browser with your Reddit account. You can also share messages under your own username (you/yourname) and hope that many people like your message.
