The 19th edition of the FurgoVolkswagen is celebrated, an event with almost 900 vans that began as an amateur gathering.
19 years ago, in 2004, a group of fans of Volkswagen vans decided to hold a rally with their ‘vans’. The place chosen was the La Ballena Alegre campsite, in Sant Pere Pescador (Girona), a region of Alt Ampurdán very close to the border with France.
Since that year it has rained a lot (not enough, you know), and what began as a gathering of a few fans has given way to one of the most important campervan gatherings in Spain, if not the most.
In 2005 the second edition was held, which coincided with a windsurfing world cup event, which led to no less than 1,600 people taking part on board some 200 vans.
However, growth has been sustained year after year: in 2010 the figure of 3,000 attendees was exceeded and this 2023 nearly 900 vans have participated and 6,500 people led the 19th edition of the FurgoVolkswagen to break the attendance record after a few “weird” years due to the pandemic (in 2020 it was canceled and in 2021 it was virtual).
In 2023, Volkswagen, which has traditionally supported this meeting through its commercial vehicle division, has also shown its new Amarok pick-up live, although among those present the entire camper range present seemed to have more pull, from the Caddy California to the Grand California, and without overlooking the icon that is the California.
In addition, during the concentration a barbecue was held that has now become a tradition, as well as other events such as a costume contest (there were some who all dressed up… van included).
