Yamaha R7, a universal sport tourism

The R7, Yamaha’s medium displacement sport touring vehicle, is the model with which the firm welcomes a new generation of riders to the R world. A motorcycle that brings us back to that concept of sports that triumphed a few decades ago, those motorcycles with which you could both make a route and enjoy it on a circuit with full guarantee. You can even compete in the exciting Yamaha R7 Cup.

The Yamaha R series continues its natural evolution. While the flagship models of the brand with the three forks, the R1M, R1 and R6 RACE, winner of the Supersport World Championship with Dominique Aegerter, firmly dominate the Sport Turismo market from the top, the latest R7 is, in its own right, the model with which the Japanese firm welcomes a new generation of pilots to the R world.

And it does so with a motorcycle that combines the best of two of its most renowned models. As the brand itself assures, “The R7 is specifically intended for those who are looking for a pure Supersport design with exciting performance for their day-to-day life”. Not surprisingly, the base of this sport tourer is the well-known Yamaha MT-07 2021, so the chassis, swingarm, tires and engine are the same as the popular naked.

His exterior? Add an integral fairing, which copies the aesthetics of the attractive R6 and its sporty elements. That is to say, it incorporates an inverted fork, semi-monoblock radial front brake callipers, a renewed tank and a new two-level seat and tail assembly.

The footpegs, on the other hand, are further back. And two clip-on handlebars have been located, although above the crown, so the riding position is sportier than on the MT-07, without reaching extreme RR. In other words, useful for day to day and effective on the circuit.

Fast, agile and daring

Getting into the matter, with 73.4 CV at 8,750 rpm, the R7’s 689 cc CP2 engine offers acceleration and instant throttle response that has little or nothing to envy to that of its sisters. And it is that its 270º crankshaft generates an irregular ignition interval that guarantees a lively and exciting sensation as the revs increase, while the powerful linear torque will allow you to develop the power necessary and just enough to take the curves at the speed you want. . More or less fast. You choose.

The frontal area of the R7 is, incidentally, the smallest of the R-series models. And it guarantees the highest levels of aerodynamic efficiency. An effect that is also enhanced by its clip-on handlebars, its rearward footrests and a low seat that together allow a comfortable and sporty riding position to be adopted.

Incidentally, the R7 is the first Yamaha with a CP2 engine to be equipped with an Assist Slipper (A&S) clutch, which offers smoother gear changes and prevents engine over-rev and rear wheel hop during hard braking. . This undoubtedly allows for more predictable and controllable driving when approaching corners. Similarly, this A&S clutch offers a greater feeling of lightness in the lever.

The lightest bike in the R series

In addition, thanks to the compact dimensions of the CP2 engine, Yamaha designers have managed to develop a sporty body –with aluminum lower panels– that is thinner than any other model in the R series. And we are talking about a weight light of only 188 kg!

According to the firm’s engineers, the rigidity balance of the R7 has been adjusted with an aluminum center brace, as well as with the use of tubes with different tension forces. In addition, these key features contribute to an excellent responsive and agile ride.

The R7 also stands out for its impressive double front optics, with an M-shaped air duct and a powerful central LED headlight. The radical shape of the rear tail and the tank are, without a doubt, a trademark of the house and unequivocal signs that we are dealing with an R series model.

unbeatable control

On the other hand, the R7’s advanced-spec brakes and suspension offer unbeatable controllability when cornering and braking.

Finally, its 41mm KYB inverted front forks provide a natural and confident feel on both racetracks and twisty roads. Because? This advanced-featured front end offers excellent control and precision thanks to, among other things, full adjustability of preload, as well as rebound and compression damping, as well as mounting a gravity-cast upper triple clamp and lower triple clamp. forged aluminum.

Do you want even more? Configure it to your liking, you can even turn it into a complete racing motorcycle in the Yamaha configurator.

In short, if you are looking for strong emotions both on the circuit and on the road, the R7 is your motorcycle.

Available in two finishes, Icon Blue and Yamaha Black, you can buy it from 9,799 euros.
