The return of Formula 1 to open television becomes the most watched on Sunday.
The Formula 1 Spanish GP this Sunday was seen on Telecinco for free and open on television for the third consecutive year. With a broadcast led by the journalist Gonzalo Serrano, the race brought together more than two million viewers on average, who saw Max Verstappen win and Fernando Alonso and Carlos Sainz fight on the track, in a Grand Prix that did not have much action.
It was not the best race for the Spanish drivers, despite the fact that Sainz started from second position. However, it soon became clear that the Ferrari did not have the pace to fight Verstappen nor to keep the Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton and George Russell behind him. In the end, Carlos finished in fifth position, also surpassed by ‘Checo’ Pérez.
As for Fernando Alonso, the Spaniard started from eighth position after damaging his flat bottom in qualifying. During the race, the Aston Martin AMR23 did not have the pace to fight against Mercedes, Red Bull or Sainz’s Ferrari, eventually taking seventh. Of course, the public enjoyed their overtaking of Tsunoda, Zhou and Ocon.
Despite the fact that the results for the Spaniards were not as good as expected – it was believed that Alonso could achieve his 33rd victory here – and that the race did not have much action, with Verstappen in his own league, the Spanish fans showed once again that F1 likes. And more if ours are up.
No less than 2,250,000 viewers on average enjoyed the Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix on Telecinco, in the punctual return of the queen category to open broadcasts. Approximately 4.4 million viewers tuned into the Mediaset channel at some point during the test to watch at least one minute.
The seventh appointment of the F1 2023 calendar had a 20.9% ‘share’, but that was not the only great result: the previous one was seen by 1.4 million people (15.7% share), and the post-career program, for 1.5 million (15.1% share). The F1 race was the most watched of the day on TV.
On Telecinco, the journalists Gonzalo Serrano, Iván Vicario and the former driver Jaime Alguersuari, with David Ibáñez from the circuit, were in charge of transmitting to the spectators what was happening on the Montmeló track.
The Spanish GP could also be seen on the usual channel, DAZN F1, within Movistar TV. Here, it registered 623,000 viewers, to which must be added the 278,000 of the #Vamos channel, available to all Movistar TV users, whether or not they have subscribed to the Sports package. On pay TV, F1 was also the most watched of the day.
In total, in all media that offer audiences, the test gathered 3,151,000 viewers. To this should be added the data of those who watched the race through the DAZN platform, which does not offer viewing figures or subscriber data.
The data reflects the growing interest in Formula 1 in our country thanks to the good results achieved by Alonso at the start of the season and the hope that Carlos Sainz can have a Ferrari fast enough to fight for podiums and victories. Not surprisingly, the race was attended by 125,565 people.
The rest of the season’s races will be available to watch live on DAZN F1 and, if anyone is wondering after viewing the open audience data, it is highly unlikely that F1 will be able to be watched for free again in the future due to the high costs that operators have to pay to have television rights.
