So you can watch The Simpsons on Disney+ in its original format

Times change and old series are adapted so that they can be viewed in a more coherent way compared to the Smart TVs that users have in their homes today. However, you may not want to watch The Simpsons in 16:9 as offered by Disney+. Now we explain what you have to do to put it in its original format without leaving the platform.

A few days ago I started watching The Simpsons, one of the best series on Disney+, from the first season. It’s not the first time. I’ve probably watched the episodes from the initial ten seasons so many times that I could see the images in my head with my eyes closed. Most likely the same thing happens to you. So when I started playing the episodes on Disney+, my eyes hurt. I didn’t want to see it in 16:9!

The classic style

Imagine that, in addition to adding the extended image format, what Disney+ does is use AI (or anything else) to change Homer’s original voice from the great Carlos Revilla to that of his current actor, Carlos Ysbert. And be careful, because both voices are fantastic, but the memory of having seen those episodes with Homer’s first voice is something that I don’t want to change for anything.

That hasn’t happened, but it could happen. I see this hypothetical change at the same level as the modification that has been made to the image. The chapters have gone from their classic 4:3 format to a 16:9 format that causes the image to extend to fill the entire screen. In many episodes it is just “strange”, but in others you find that there are elements of the image that are no longer displayed. It’s not exactly a pretty thing.

That’s how easy it is

At first, when Disney+ was just starting out and introduced seasons of The Simpsons, there was no way to change the aspect ratio. However, over time this capacity has been introduced. Even so, there are many people who do not know how to do it.

@SimpsonDoblaje On Disney Plus I also see that they are in 16:9 (or I don’t know how to change it).

In reality, we too have had to resort to a search to discover it. Luckily, it is possible and, furthermore, it is easy. All you have to do is enter the Simpsons profile or any of its episodes and, from the interface, go to the third tab. To help you get your bearings, we can tell you that the first tab is for episodes and the second is for related content.

The third is where the system will allow you to deactivate the box to see the remastered content. Most likely, you have that box activated, so you will have to remove it and you will start watching The Simpsons episodes in their original format. Of course, the episodes that you will see in this format will be those that were made at the time in that aspect ratio, given that the modern seasons are already produced directly in 16:9 and, logically, there is no way around it.

But there is one last problem

Although I regret it, my experience watching these first seasons, even after having changed the screen format, is not as satisfactory as I would have liked. There is still something inside me that makes me understand that it is better to keep the DVDs and not get rid of them no matter how tempting it may seem. The reason is the adaptation that has been made of the image.

Although in many ways it looks good, the way the noise reduction work has been carried out on the image is too aggressive. As a result, although the image and color look wonderful, what happens is that there are some too thick black lines in the silhouettes of the characters. Originally these lines were thin strokes, but with these adaptation processes they have ended up becoming lines that look like they were made with a very thick black marker.

And, unfortunately, that is something that we cannot deactivate in any way. This is due to the adaptation that has been made to the image and it does not seem that, for the moment, it is going to change. Of course, there are many people who talk about it and have complained, but most likely it is not a sufficient reason for Disney to invest resources in offering other alternative presentations of the episodes. On the other hand, you have to recognize that it is something you end up getting used to.
