The telephone company has celebrated the growth in its own fiber optic network to homes, which allows it to guarantee its competitiveness for the future.
The CEO of the Romanian operator Digi, Marius Varzaru, has assured regarding the investment in infrastructure that the company has been making in Spain, that they still have a lot of operating margin, being able to continue expanding their fiber network for, at least, five more years.
This is what the manager expressed this Tuesday at an informative breakfast organized by the consulting firm Accenture and Expansión, in which he also rejected the idea of merging services with other firms in exchange for greater consolidation in the country.
The Romanian company still has room to travel, in the context of the agreement with Onivia reached in April, by which Digi will sell 6 million FTTH (fiber to the home) accesses in Spain to the wholesale operator for 750 million euros. According to Varzaru, 1.75 million accesses of those 6 still have to be deployed in the next three years, in a contract that will help them expand their fiber map in our country, since Digi will also continue to use this network and will be in charge of its maintenance.
The counselor has also warned that, in the coming years, the sector will most likely invest heavily in infrastructure, more than in previous years, especially with a view to the deployment of the 5G network. According to Varzaru, investing in their own fiber optic networks has been essential to achieve a good position in the market and be able to compete with large operators, which would not have been possible if they had continued renting networks from other companies. This is why Digi plans to continue investing in infrastructure for five more years, that is, approximately until 2029.
Those at Digi have also taken the opportunity to try to disassociate themselves from the term “low cost”, ensuring that, although this expression comes from the airline sector, in which some companies offer a lower cost in exchange for a worse or inferior service, digital operators like yours, they offer a service with the same quality as their competitors while charging a lower price.
Likewise, the Romanian operator conveyed a lack of interest on the part of Digi about the possibility of participating in consolidation processes in the near future, unlike the Alicante company Finetwork, which would welcome being part of merger processes between focused operators. in infrastructure and focused on distribution. This was stated by Óscar Vilda, CEO of Finetwork who also participated in the event.
While Vilda welcomed the fact that there was a consolidation in the range of new companies facing traditional operators, Digi disassociated itself, claiming that its objective is to be a relevant operator in fixed and mobile lines, with a long-term project.
Finetwork will advance in the distribution channel
Óscar Vilda also commented during the event that Finetwork has begun to work more to improve the distribution channel, recognizing that this had been its weak point in recent years. The operator considers that this segment can serve as a great opportunity to differentiate itself from its competitors.
Finally, both Finetwork and Digi agreed in demanding openness in the markets, necessary so that companies with fewer means can prosper and result in better prices for users.
