Browser updates are especially important if users want to be protected from cyber threats when using the Internet. Without going any further, the latest version of Google Chrome had nine patches against detected vulnerabilities. But it seems that this has not been enough to make it safe, since they have detected three new security gaps that they must correct before June.

Cybersecurity experts remember that we have to have all connected devices updated to avoid cyber attacks. However, it is also key to have the latest version of programs or applications installed and, that is where browsers like Google Chrome come in. Unfortunately, even by updating we are not free of exploits that may arise.

Although Google tries to correct all the vulnerabilities it finds with its updates, new ones always emerge. In Chrome 125, the latest version of the famous browser, the company introduced nine security patches. Therefore, this new software is more secure than the previous one. But more gaps continue to appear that will have to be corrected, at least, before June 10.

Three Zero Day vulnerabilities

The technology company has detected three new vulnerabilities in Chrome this last month. These are the much-feared Zero Day security breaches. In a post from the National Cybersecurity Institute (INCIBE), they explain that this type of exploit refers to those that have just been discovered and still do not have a patch to solve.

security breaches malware cyber attack

First, Google reported that they had found a breach they named CVE-2024-4671 (May 9). Through it, criminals could execute code in which pointers to unoccupied memory were not deleted. Later, on May 13, the company talked about CVE-2024-4761, a vulnerability that affected Chrome’s Javascript V8 engine and allowed a system to be attacked with fraudulent HTML pages.

The last one to be detected was the so-called CVE-2024-4947, which Google warned about on May 15. As they warned, this vulnerability allowed attackers to exploit a bug remotely and execute their own code in an HTML page. In this way, cybercriminals could destabilize the browser or the system as a whole.

Chrome should release an update soon

Between May 9 and 15, three vulnerabilities were detected. If we do the math, that’s a security breach detected every two days. In less than a week, Google informed us of several exploits for which it had not yet found a solution. It is normal that some users may worry about possible attacks.

Google Chrome is the most used web browser in the world. According to a Statista report from March 2024, it accounts for approximately 65% of the global internet browser market share. Its widespread use forces the company to take action quickly and, at the latest, they will have to offer an update on June 10.

The three vulnerabilities are part of the list of worrying exploits of the United States Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA). The government entity has required all federal agencies to update Chrome to correct security flaws on their computers. This forces the firm to hurry so that officials can secure their devices and continue using their browser.

How to update Google Chrome

At the moment, Google has not notified that it has ready the corrections for the three security breaches. We will have to wait a little longer to be protected. In principle, the fact that there are exploits does not imply that we are going to suffer a cyber attack, but there is a certain risk.

There are times when vulnerabilities exist and companies are not able to detect them anyway. Therefore, we could say that the first step to offering good security is to know them. That is to say, Google is on the right track and we hope that they will offer us a solution very soon in the form of a Chrome update.

Normally, the new version of the browser would have to be installed automatically. However, to make sure, you should pay attention manually:

  • Click on the three vertically placed dots in the upper right corner of Google Chrome.
  • A series of actions will be displayed. You will have to scroll down until you find the “Settings” option.
  • Once inside, go to «Chrome Information«. It is one of the last options that appear on the left of the tab.
  • The page will be redirected to another section and, from there, you will be able to see the version you have installed. If an update is available, download it.
