Google TV users are encountering a survey through which the company wants to find out their opinion about the advertising that appears on the interface. Because it is obvious that, these days, ads are part of the DNA of this type of service, but Google wants to know what users’ opinions are so they can possibly make adjustments.
The Google TV interface is not too far from what other television environments and apps offer and the presence of ads, recommendations and promotional banners is the order of the day. It cannot be said, in reality, that there is not a good volume of advertisements. Perhaps that is why Google wants to know opinions, because they surely do not want to go overboard and for users not to enjoy the experience.
Google TV advertising evolves
The Google service has gone through several phases related to advertising management. Originally, the ads that appeared were quite small and Google TV basically focused on everything that was directly related to streaming. At that time there may have been some basic rules to follow when selecting the advertising or ads that would be integrated with the interface. However, with the passage of time, this supposed norm would have faded until reaching a moment in which Google TV advertising adopts any type of identity.
Many other campaigns that are no longer so related have been added to the original ads, those that promoted specific content on a streaming service. For example, ads have been seen about new cars and also about restaurants or shopping centers. The ads related to video games, within everything that is not 100% related to the core of Google TV, could be said to have been the most digestible. But in a way, users have been shocked to see how this advertising has evolved in this way.
In addition to that, the advertising that appears on the interface has also been losing its timidity. From the original banners that, in some cases, were not recognized as advertisements, they have moved on to advertising that starts automatically and generates different sensations. Not all videos are played without asking the user for permission, but a good group of them are. For Google TV it may end up being a slightly higher advertising volume than normal. Due to this, the fact that this survey is carried out is really positive news, since we assume that users will make their opinion clear.
How to answer the survey?
As we see on Reddit, there is no link or anything similar. Google seems to be doing the survey randomly among Google TV users. If you are selected to participate in it, you will notice that a notice appears in the lower right corner of your television inviting you to respond. The good thing is that the survey is answered at maximum speed, since Google gets to the point. What the statement says is “To what level do you agree or disagree with this statement: In general, I think that the ads that appear on the main page of Google TV are acceptable.” And the survey provides five possible responses that range from strongly agreeing to strongly disagreeing or, as a last possibility, not having an opinion on the matter.
For many users, as can be read in the comments, the problem with Google TV is not advertising, but rather that the system does not stop recommending content from platforms to which they are not subscribed. But, of course, therein lies one of the secrets of these ads, since what they want is for as many people as possible to subscribe to the aforementioned streaming platforms.
