These are not good times for streaming consumers. After several years of bad habit of having fairly low prices for subscriptions, sharing accounts and being able to see all the content we wanted without any type of advertisement or publicity, since Netflix took the first step to eradicate all these advantages, all other platforms They have followed in his footsteps. And today, we add one more to the list.
Netflix was the first streaming platform to start raising prices up to twice a year, making it no longer as much of a bargain as it was before. And not only that, but the platform, which so encouraged sharing passwords, has gotten serious and blocked this possibility for all users. In addition, for those to whom the Premium plan seems clear, it has also begun to offer a plan with ads, somewhat cheaper, which, to everyone’s surprise, has been a resounding success.
After seeing how all these measures have not had as negative an impact as expected on the platform, and not only that, but it has even managed to skyrocket profits, the rest of the streaming platforms have followed the same steps. The second to do the same has been Disney+, which not only raised prices at the end of 2023, but since the beginning of 2024 has offered its “cheap” plan with ads. And this same month it was Prime Video, the platform included in Amazon Prime, who began a similar movement.
But, as the saying goes, there are no two without three. And, a few minutes ago, we confirmed the new platform that joins the advertising trend and a price increase: SkyShowtime.
This is the new plan with SkyShowtime ads
The arrival of SkyShowtime in Spain was quite beneficial for users. The platform offered (and offers, for now) its only subscription plan of 5.99 euros per month. In addition, those who registered at launch could enjoy the company’s entire catalog with a 50% discount for life (as long as the subscription was not stopped). But everything comes to an end.
About to celebrate one year in Spain, SkyShowtime has decided to completely change its business model. And the first change that we are going to see is that the current plan is now called “Standard Plus”, and its price will increase by two euros, reaching 7.99 euros per month. Users who enjoy their 50% discount will continue to maintain it, since the company has confirmed it. Therefore, these users will pay 3.99 euros per month for the “Standard Plus” plan without ads.
But, in addition to this price increase, the platform has announced the launch of a new subscription plan: the “Standard with ads”. This plan will have a price of 4.99 euros per month (one euro less than the current one), it will not be within the 50% discount promotionand it will work the same as its rivals’ plans: they will show ads before and during the playback of a series or movie.
This price increase is also reflected in the annual modalities. The current one, which has a price of 46.99 euros, will cost 62.99 euros, while the annual subscription to the new plan with ads would cost 39.99 euros per year.
When does it come into force
If you want to enjoy SkyShowtime as we knew it until now, you must hurry. And the company has confirmed that both the price increase and the new plan with ads will come into effect on April 23. If you purchase the annual plan, you will be able to enjoy the service at this price until next year.
As of this date, the current plan will no longer exist as we know it, and users who have the 50% lifetime discount will have the increase applied to their next billing cycle.
