It is a kind of case that would allow an Apple Watch to be used as a dumb phone, offering a new value proposition for those looking for all possible alternatives to avoid the distractions of social networks and platforms that flood our contemporary phones.
Projects continue to create new mobile devices that can replace our current smartphones. Although a few days ago we already mentioned the new Light Phone III, an update of the famous dumbphone with which to detoxify from social networks, this time we collect the new concept of a distraction-free mobile phone created by the company Cake.
This is a product still in the development stage, since as we can see in its Web, there is not even a confirmed departure date. Instead, they invite those interested to subscribe by email to be informed when they can start placing their first orders. Still, it is an interesting concept and aesthetically reminiscent of the disgraced Rabbit R1.
With a square and retro design, “Cake” aims to serve as an alternative mobile phone with which to abandon infinite scrolling and continuous distractions. Instead, little Cake focuses “on what matters” and on giving the user back time away from screens, in which to go outside and “touch grass,” as they commonly say on the Internet. Thus, the only functions that it will allow are:
- Calls and messages
- music streaming
- Maps
- Business notes and notifications
- Apple Pay
Allowing only this small range of functionalities, Cake allows the user to abandon another series of tools on today’s smartphones that, if abused, end up causing negative effects: surfing the Internet, doomscrolling (spending too much time looking at things on the Internet), social networks, online shopping, and addictive video games.
The curious thing is that, judging by the design shown in some promotional images, in reality this device would simply be a capsule in which to insert smart watch faces such as the Apple Watch. That is, they would not create a phone entirely from scratch, but simply through what would become a casing, they would offer a new way of looking at smartwatches and using them as complete mobile phones optimized for those who want to spend less time connected to the Internet.
A different use for smart watches
As some comment on their of social networks and the Internet.
There is actually very little information available from the company, and in fact doubts arise about its intentions. For example, in a promotional image on their
In any case, and although some may criticize that it is just a glorified casing, a tool like Cake could completely change the way smart watches are usually used, differentiating themselves from both smartphones and dumbphones. What is not entirely clear, however, is what kind of difference there would be between having the Apple Watch tied to your arm, or putting it inside Cake. At the moment, it has not yet gone beyond being just a concept, so we will have to see if it finally materializes into a real product, and what advantages it would offer compared to the daily use of an Apple Watch on the user’s wrist.
