Citroën C5 X

These are the 4 secrets of the revolutionary suspension of the Citroën C5 X, the Citroën Advanced Comfort Active Suspension with Progressive Hydraulic Shock Absorbers.

If Citroën is famous for something, it is for its suspension systems. For years, research in this field has defined the future of the French firm’s cars and the Citroën C5 X, the brand’s new flagship, was not going to be less. The company with the two chevrons reveals to us the 4 secrets of its revolutionary suspension.

Officially named Citroën Advanced Comfort Active Suspension, this system joins the Progressive Hydraulic Shock Absorbers already present in other company models, such as the Citroën C4, the C5 Aircross and the aforementioned C5 X.

“The vehicle adapts the suspension of each wheel to respond more softly or firmly depending on the conditions,” explains the manufacturer in a statement. According to Citroën, the C5 X plug-in hybrid offers, as a world first, this suspension scheme with Progressive Hydraulic Shock Absorbers and active suspension control. These are four keys:

maximum comfort

The Citroën Advanced Comfort Active Suspension is equipped with a series of sensors that analyze the road and its irregularities, transmitting the information to a computer that continuously determines the correct settings to guarantee maximum comfort for all occupants.

It has four vertical position sensors and three wheel speed sensors to analyze body movements and driving rhythm: longitudinal and lateral acceleration, yaw rate (rotation of the vehicle about its vertical axis), steering wheel angle and turning speed, accelerator pedal position, brake pressure, vehicle load, etc.

Four driving modes

The Citroën C5 X offers four driving modes to adapt driving to the type of road, which alters the behavior of the Citroën Advanced Comfort Active Suspension.

In Electric and Hybrid modes, which allow 100% electric driving or a combination of electricity and gasoline, respectively, the suspension is in normal mode. When activating the Comfort mode, the active suspension goes into a mode also called comfort. And in Sport driving mode, the suspension becomes sportier and more precise.

Two-stage operation

The suspension works in two stages depending on road conditions:

  • In light compressions and spring movements, the spring and damper control vertical movements without the use of hydraulic dampers; while these shock absorbers help engineers create vehicles with greater freedom of movement, providing that “flying carpet” effect.
  • During high compressions, the suspension system works in conjunction with the hydraulic compression damper, gradually slowing down the movement to avoid a harsh response at the end of its travel. Unlike a conventional mechanical shock absorber, the hydraulic shock absorber absorbs and dissipates this energy. Therefore, there is no bounce.

Focused on passenger well-being

Citroën Advanced Comfort Active Suspension focuses on the well-being of passengers, so it takes into account aspects such as cushioning, body support, acoustics, seats, lighting, spaciousness, ergonomics, versatility or the services, elements studied in the Citroën C5 X to improve passenger comfort on board.
