Hydrogen continues to take small steps to become a viable alternative to battery-powered electric cars: Cummins has begun work to build its green hydrogen gigafactory in Guadalajara, its first electrolyser plant in Europe, in which it will invest 80 millions of euros.

It will be located in the Polígono del Ruiseñor, located in the capital of the province, and Teresa Ribera, third vice-president of the Government and minister for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, has been laying the first stone; Emiliano García-Page, the President of the Government of Castilla-La Mancha; and Alberto Rojo, mayor of Guadalajara.

The construction will take an estimated time of almost two years and the plant is expected to be operational in 2024, initially with 150 workers, although the possibility of expanding the workforce with 200 additional people is contemplated as production increases within the factory.

Teresa Ribera has declared that “a new adventure is beginning from the world to Spain and from Guadalajara to the world”, and that green hydrogen “is already present and that it has to be a promising future”.

For his part, Emiliano García-Page has pointed out that “it is going to be a magnet for other companies, since we are laying the foundations not only of a large company but of a new economy” and that “Spain now has a course that ensures get through the storm in a stronger way than other countries around us.”

In addition, it has concluded that “Cummins investment in Guadalajara will bring highly qualified jobs to Castilla-La Mancha, will make the local economy grow and will help position this region and Spain at the forefront of the green transition in Europe”.

The company’s vice president, Alexey Ustinov, has pointed out that “we cannot achieve our objective of reducing polluting emissions at a global level without support such as that of this Government and this has been one of the main factors why we have chosen Spain for this project industrial”.

Finally, Alberto Rojo, has exposed: “Guadalajara has been able to take advantage of all its potential and start a process of expansion. This plant inaugurates an unstoppable business takeoff for the city”.
