Digi is not only working on adding television to its services, but it also seems to be determined to include football and other sports. To do so, the operator has already begun to take the first steps in Portugal with a possible agreement with DAZN in mind that could prove very profitable. Could something similar happen in Spain?
Digi has been unstoppable lately. The operator has big growth plans and its figures in Spain are making it clear that it is achieving a really high level of success. Because of this, it is obvious to expect that they will continue to grow and that, little by little, they will want to offer more to their customers. An agreement with DAZN in Portugal could be an excellent first step to continue their expansion.
What’s happening in Portugal?
From Portugal, the CEO of DAZN in the country has spoken about the possibilities of seeing its service connected to the Romanian operator. In these statements that he has made and that are reported by the Portuguese media, the CEO of DAZN Portugal recognizes the way in which Digi is becoming another important name within the telecommunications market.
This is something we have already seen in Spain, where Digi’s service, through an aggressive pricing policy, is reaching more and more people. Jorge Pavão de Sousa, CEO of DAZN’s Portuguese subsidiary, says that his company has the habit of negotiating with all possible distributors in each market. And, for this reason, they have undoubtedly also spoken with Digi.
The agreement with the operator, which is also present in other markets, such as Italy or Romania, could significantly boost Digi’s ability to succeed. In addition, as we have already mentioned, the operator is also working on its plans to offer television service to its customers. With television and sports, it would have everything it needs to compete with the major operators in the market and thus close the gap. Considering that Digi is still a relatively new operator, it must be acknowledged that its progress is really rapid.
Is such an agreement possible in Spain?
There’s probably no reason why this couldn’t happen. Although the agreement being worked out between Digi and DAZN Portugal doesn’t cover our country, the truth is that DAZN Spain already has a good track record of carrying out this type of contract. For example, Vodafone customers can access DAZN content, which goes some way to alleviating the fact that the operator doesn’t offer a football or sports package to its customers.
In this context, what Digi could do would be to catch up with Vodafone and also integrate the DAZN service into its own fibre and mobile rates. It would not be at the same level as Orange, the operator that offers Movistar’s sports channels and content, but at least they would start to make a strong entrance into the market. Therefore, it should not be ruled out, by any means, that something like this could also be signed in Spain and that the Romanian operator’s customers could access offers or proposals that include sports.
If this becomes official, the good results that Digi announced a few days ago could not only continue its growth process, but it would also have a significant impact on the market. But, for now, let us remember that these negotiations and conversations are taking place in Portugal, so it is not clear whether it will end up happening in Spain or not.
