How much is the new synthetic fuel expected to cost from 2024? Sneak peek: It will still be more expensive than conventional diesel and gasoline.
In recent days, much has been said about e-fuel, the CO2-neutral synthetic fuel that is obtained from green hydrogen. There are already several automotive companies that are investigating this alternative fuel and even Germany has managed to get the European Union to reconsider to allow e-fuel beyond 2035.
But how much is the new synthetic fuel expected to cost from 2024? There are already several reports suggesting what the estimated price of e-fuel will be. For example, a recent study by the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) indicates that synthetic fuels will cost about 2.80 euros per liter refueled in 2030.
E-fuel, this is what the new synthetic fuel is expected to cost from 2024
This is roughly 50% more expensive than the current price of gasoline, meaning it would cost drivers to fill up a 75-litre e-fuel tank around €210 seven years from now, according to a Transport & Environment study. , while an average tank of 50 liters would cost 140 euros.
In 2024, the price of synthetic fuel will be even higher, although there are no figures to prove it. However, the eFuel Alliance, made up of different companies related to the transport sector, including Mazda, calculates that the price of synthetic fuel will decrease over the years until it becomes cheaper than traditional gasoline.
The main reasons why synthetic fuel has such a high price is the enormous amount of energy used to produce it and the need to import it from abroad.
At these prices, e-fuel is a luxury item only available to people who are wealthy or willing to invest a lot of money in exchange for filling the tank. In fact, the same Transport & Environment study calculates that refueling with synthetic gasoline would cost the average driver at least 2,300 euros a year.
