And the possibility of equipping seven seats
Electrification is the present. You only have to take a quick look at the Mercedes-Benz AG range, with eight 100% electric models, to realize this. And if there is any hint of doubt, here are two facts: the first is that four years ago there was only one, and the second is that in a short space of time, at least three more will arrive: the Mercedes EQE SUV, the EQG -the electric G-Class- and the Maybach EQS SUV. Today, the Stuttgart company is not committed to another type of alternative energy, not even e-fuels, although Europe changes its mind, and in 2030 they want to sell only full electric where market conditions allow it.
The last one that has reached the Spanish market is the one in the test, the Mercedes EQS SUV. It is the flagship of electric SUVs. A Mercedes-Benz EQS -in fact it shares a platform with the sedan- but raised and with a more powerful package. And for this reason it perfectly responds to the motto of the star’s signature: “There is no luxury without sustainability”.
outside and inside
That wrapper I was talking about measures 5,125 mm in length, 1,959 mm in width and 1,718 mm in height, making it smaller than the Mercedes GLS. Even so, it is a considerable size. And it is that to give you an idea, it is longer than a Tesla Model X.
In its exterior design there is no surprise. It maintains the language of the EQ family, both in the fairing grill and in the optical groups, which are united, a hallmark of Mercedes electric cars. And for this reason, as in the case of its range brothers, it is attractive.
From my point of view and as with Beast, Belle’s, the best is inside. And it is that its Hyperscreen screen, standard on the 580, is hypnotic. It is a surface made of two layers of aluminum silicate glass that houses three screens, and that by size would be equivalent to a 56″. The one on the left, 12.3″, acts as a digital instrument panel. of the passenger, which also has the same size, you can navigate through different options -if the seat is not occupied, it is turned off-.
The central one is 17.7″ and surprises, like the previous ones, for its resolution. You know that I am in favor of physical buttons, at least for the most important functions, but in the Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV, despite not equipping any I have to admit that it’s more or less easy to hit the key… Never better said. Also, you have the AI at your disposal when you say “Hello Mercedes”.
Another technological deployment to mention is the Head-up Display with augmented reality. And it is that the surface where it is displayed would be equivalent to a 77″ screen.
And like Mercedes that it is, it equips first-class materials such as leather, suede and wood, which cover almost the entire cabin. The perceived sensation of both touch is very good. And to show the attention to detail in the EQS SUV, the brown magnolia wood can adopt aluminum inlays in the Mercedes-Benz pattern.
And when it comes to space, thanks to its 3,210-mm wheelbase, second-row passengers have plenty of legroom. Also for the head, although it equips a panoramic roof like the test unit of the Mercedes EQS SUV 580 4Matic. A third row with two individual seats can be installed. This one, obviously, is fairer. More for children than for adults, because the seats are fairer than those of the Mercedes GLS.
As for the trunk, it has a capacity of 645 liters -there is not one in the front part as they do have many electric ones-, a figure that rises to 880 if the second row is moved 130 mm -its inclination can also be controlled by 18 degrees- and 2,100 liters if the backs of this are lowered.
engine and performance
The Mercedes EQS SUV is available in three versions: 450, 450 4Matic, 580 4Matic. The Spanish market will only receive all-wheel drive variants. The power of the access, if this word can be used with an EQS SUV, yields 360 CV, while the most powerful, 544. The first accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 6″ and reaches a maximum speed of 210 km /h, and the second one copies the tip and accelerates to 100 from a standstill in 4.6″.
The official consumption of the 450 is 20.6 kWh/100 km, and the 580, 20.4 kWh/100 km. For this reason, the autonomy on paper is 600 and 603 km, respectively, when equipping a 108.4 kWh battery.
Behavior
We have been able to test the Mercedes EQS SUV 580 4Matic briefly during the national presentation. It stands out for its smooth running, its silence, which is dangerous, by the way, because you can far exceed the maximum speed on the road, and the great work done by the suspension with air springs and electronically controlled shock absorbers.
It has different driving modes: Eco, Comfort, Sport, Individual and Off road. It is pressing the most sporty and at the slightest touch of the right peal, the car is catapulted like a rocket. And that on the scale adds up, beware, 2,810 kg!
Also regeneration: D+, D, and D-. There is one called D auto with which the car takes traffic into account and automatically adjusts retention. It seemed to me that even when approaching a speed bump.
The car has very good cornering behavior for its dimensions and its high weight. Understand me, it is not a sports car, so do not look for limits in the turns, but it does keep the type in them.
That on the highway, because in the city – the brand says that in the city its autonomy goes up to 684 km – it makes things easier for the rear axle to be directional. As standard, its wheels can rotate up to 4.5 degrees -11.9 turning diameter-, although with an Over the Air update -the data is sent to the car without the need to go to the workshop- its rotation can be increased up to 10 degrees -11.0 meters-.
Price
The price of the Mercedes EQS SUV starts at 144,947 euros, if we talk about the 450 4Matic version, and 172,525 euros, in the case of the top of the range, the 580 4Matic. Both come with the AMG Line finish as standard and with the following equipment: 21″ AMG light-alloy wheels, beltline and window trim strips in open-pore anthracite linestructure lime wood, MBUX multimedia system and 12.8″ OLED infotainment system display (Hyperscreen on the 580), among other items.
