Forget about the best image quality on your LG Smart TV if you play via HDMI

As much as it is one of the favorite brands of many, you may have noticed that your LG smart TV doesn’t look as good at all times. This is what happens with the brand’s range of Smart TVs with QNED technology, and it is not said by the users themselves, but rather by an opinion from the Advertising Jury.

You may or may not have already figured it out on your own. In any case, a disgruntled customer became concerned about this very thing. Hence, he decided at the time to file a claim with Autocontrol. And all for carrying out misleading advertising about their Smart TVs with a QNED screen. But what exactly does the ruling establish?

The problem with LG QNED panels

This type of screen combines up to three types of image technologies: mini LED backlighting, Quantum Dot and Nanocell. Three options that seek to achieve higher brightness peaks with a deeper black, in addition to improving color accuracy. The drawback is that the best result is not always enjoyed. Because? Well basically because the user is not offered the best quality in any circumstance.

This is stated by Autocontrol in its opinion No. 144/R/JUNIO/2024. And all from a claim that occurred in front of an online advertisement in which the following was stated: “100% color consistency”, “Different angles, the same original color” and “You do not need to watch television from the front to appreciate the sensational color of the LG QNED. With 100% color volume, colors look vivid and accurate even when viewed from angles up to 30°«, «*QNED 99/95/90 feature 100% color volume«; «*Certified by Intertek that 100% color consistency is achieved, measured by CIE DE2000 according to the 18 Macbeth color patterns with a viewing angle ± 30°. *All models that support 100% color consistency are certified by Intertek (…)«.

LG Smart TV

Well, the upset client provided a technical report, issued by the advertiser’s Technical Service Department, in which it was explained that the image quality promised in the advertising is only achieved “through the local attenuation of the equipment”, that is, through the applications or the antenna input. Therefore, if a user watches content through HDMI, they do not really enjoy the best image quality that LG’s QNED panels promise. This is precisely why, as a user, you may notice that when you connect devices through this television input, the colors become lighter and it looks worse than in apps or the antenna input.

In this way, Autocontrol makes it clear that the Smart TV brand’s advertisement does not conform to reality and, therefore, is not truthful. However, LG, not being under this self-regulatory body, is not affected, although the body clarifies that “this opinion is issued only with the information provided by the applicant, lacking
of any nature of a binding nature. The opinion expresses the opinion of the Jury on the deontological correctness of the advertising submitted to its analysis, which, as usual, is subject to any other better founded one.”
