Surely you know the Plex tool, which becomes one of the best multimedia centers that you can access on your devices. But do you know that it also has a music player? You may have never tried it before because, until now, it was a feature available only to Premium account users. However, that just changed.

Plex has become one of our great secrets to centralize all video entertainment, allowing us to access series and movies as if it were a custom-made Netflix. In addition, the platform also has FAST TV channels and, now, we are going to add another of its functions to our list of favorites: Plexamp. From now on, this music player can be used for free.

It is a standalone app

Although many of the functions of Plex are combined in the program itself, which is available on all platforms, including Smart TVs, the music player is independent. As we indicated, it is called Plexamp and what it does is focus solely on music. In this way, all the contents that you have linked to your account that are not songs will disappear from the interface and thus you can concentrate on the music.

During the time that it has been available to premium users of the Plex Pass account, it has proven to be a very efficient tool. Some of its features will continue to be available only to premium users, but the bulk of its features are already enabled for everyone. Keep in mind that even though you need to download a different app, your username and password will be the same as the one you use on Plex. Ultimately, it’s all part of the same connected experience.

Free and paid features

One of the objectives that Plex has with this decision is that a greater number of people can start using the tool and that, thus, it gains more popularity. They take into account that it is possible that there are users who start using Plexamp on a regular basis and who decide to end up paying the subscription to be able to access its premium benefits.

Features that remain in the paid version include the ability to download songs or the use of artificial intelligence based on Sonic Sage. What this AI provides is a system with which the chatbot creates playlists based on the requests we make. However, it does not work perfectly nor is it so fundamental. Finally, the other functions that remain under the premium subscription are the mixer, the remix tool and the client that allows you to turn a Raspberry Pi into an audio device similar to what could be done with Chromecast Audio.

That being said, the important thing now is to focus on everything we got for free. And it’s not exactly little. As we told you, the base of the player is available without limitations and will allow you to listen to your music in a very efficient and comfortable way, something that is key to the Plex experience in all its tools. You can adjust playback options so that, for example, you can jump from one song to another immediately, you can pre-load songs to offer a better experience and use themes to personalize the user experience.

In addition, it is given the opportunity to download and use Plexamp on all kinds of devices, both mobile phones and computers, but the most interesting thing is the compatibility you have with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, AirPlay, Chromecast and with the virtual assistant Siri. This way you can verify that, if you get down to work, there will be many ways in which you will surely take advantage of the application in an exhaustive way. You’ll miss some of the features of Plex Pass, but it shouldn’t be a big deal either.
