Here we are referring to elements such as fingerprints or facial recognition that we normally use on mobile devices. But now many very important technology companies, including Google, want us to also use the so-called Passkeys.
In fact, in these very lines we want to focus on the moves that the search giant is making to convince us to use it. We tell you all this because the company has just announced that, from now on, the Passkeys added to its own password manager will be automatically synchronized between all types of devices.
It should be noted that until now this was something that we could only do on our Android-based mobile devices. However, compatibility with these security elements has increased significantly. We can now use the aforementioned Passkeys in a synchronized manner on Windows, macOS, Linux, and ChromeOS. All of this, as you can imagine, once we have logged into these devices with our Google account.
It is true that security methods that use biometric authentication provide a safer and more convenient alternative to traditional passwords. But at the moment, companies like Google are betting heavily on the use of Passkeys. Hence the growth that they have just experienced at this time so that we can use them on all types of devices using the company’s password manager.
Google makes it easier for you to use Passkeys
From now on, the search giant gives us the possibility of adding our own Passkeys from computers running Windows, macOS, Linux and Android. The most important thing about this move is that, once saved, these keys will be automatically synchronized across all these devices.
As you might imagine, this synchronization between devices simplifies logging in using the biometric method of your choice. The company added that compatibility with ChromeOS is in beta. The company also assures that compatibility with Apple iOS-based devices for this new feature will be launched shortly.
To secure the Passkeys synchronization process, Google has also introduced a new PIN for its password manager as an additional layer of protection. This PIN encrypts the synchronized data so that it remains encrypted end-to-end, making it inaccessible to anyone, including Google itself. In parallel, we can continue to use Windows Hello for personal access keys if we wish.
It should be noted that when you start using Passkeys on a new device, you will need to enter the Google Manager PIN or the lock pattern for the Android device screen. These recovery factors will allow you to securely access the saved Passkeys and synchronize the new ones between the rest of the devices.
