Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso are once again involved in a controversy over comments made by the Spanish driver in an interview.

Fernando Alonso explained a few days ago in an interview why he thinks Max Verstappen’s two titles have a different value compared to Lewis Hamilton’s. For the Asturian driver, the Dutchman had it more difficult when facing drivers from different teams with the same or better cars.

After his words, the controversy has broken out, especially among the British press and fans, since it has been considered that the two-time Spanish champion has underestimated Hamilton’s successes. Even the pilot himself has ‘bitten’, and he has made it clear by publishing a photo of a 2007 podium in which he is seen in the first position and Alonso in the second.

“I have great respect for Lewis, but it’s different to win seven world titles when your only rival has been your teammate,” Alonso told Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf. “I think that a title like that has less value than someone who, although he has had fewer titles, has had to fight with other drivers with an equal or better car.”

What you should know about the F1 Mexican GP

“I, in 2005 and 2006, was able to create an advantage at the head of the championship after a good start to the year. The others had a better car afterwards, but I was able to manage that advantage. I never had to fight against my team-mate to win the titles, just like Max hasn’t had to fight Perez or Albon to win races,” he continued.

“Schumacher, for example, battled his teammate (Rubens Barrichello) to win five titles in a row, and Hamilton battled Rosberg and Bottas. I think it’s something different,” he added.

This opinion, which will probably be shared by many fans of the Grand Circus, has been considered in the British sector almost as an insult to Hamilton’s talent, which Alonso never questioned.

Alonso himself, hours after seeing the headlines that were going around the world, complained through his Twitter account that his words had been taken out of context. “Again… Please all the titles are amazing, deserving and inspiring. They are incomparable to others, let’s enjoy the champions and legends of our time. I’m tired of the continuous search for headlines.”

Hamilton is stung and responds

After fighting for pole position at the Mexican Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton had nothing better to do than add fuel to the fire. The British wanted to respond to his former teammate, with whom this season has already had its ups and downs, in a not at all elegant way, publishing a photograph of the podium of the 2007 US GP, in which Hamilton finished first and Alonso second.

Just a few months ago, Alonso and Hamilton were involved in another controversy, when the Spaniard called his former teammate an “idiot” and said that “this boy only knows how to drive when he starts first” after a touch at the start of the Belgian GP . A few days later, they made amends: Alonso apologized and Hamilton gave him a cap.
