Time is running out to request a vote by mail in the upcoming municipal elections in May in Spain. If you don’t want to miss the opportunity to exercise your right to vote from the comfort of your home, you have to do it now! Find out everything you need to know to apply before it’s too late.

Requesting to vote by mail is a very interesting option for those voters who cannot go personally to their polling station on the day of the municipal elections. When requesting a vote by mail, the voter will receive the necessary documentation to be able to vote comfortably from her home, without having to travel on the day of the municipal elections.

This option is especially useful for those people who are sick, have mobility problems or are away from their place of residence during the date of the elections.

Application until May 18

If you plan to vote, but you won’t be able to go to your polling station in person on May 28, don’t worry, because you can apply to vote by mail until May 18. To do this, you must obtain the Certificate of Registration in the corresponding Electoral Census, which is essential to be able to vote by correspondence.

And the best of all is that now, thanks to technology, you can request it electronically through the Correos website (www.correos.es). In this way, you will not have to go in person to a post office and you can do it from your home.

To request a vote by mail electronically, you must prove your identity by means of an electronic signature, using the natural person certificates recognized by the Ministry of Industry or the electronic DNI (DNI-e). In this way, you will be able to exercise your right to vote without having to worry about travel, waiting times or last-minute unforeseen events.

You can also do it at any Post Office in the country. However, it is important that you take into account that the request must be made personally by each voter, except in special cases in which an illness or disability -accredited by official medical certification- prevents him from personally formulating the request. In these cases, another authorized person may submit the request on his behalf.

If you are a voter residing in Spain and have decided to request to vote by mail for the upcoming elections, it is important that you take into account that you will not be able to vote in person at the polling station on voting day.

When are they shipped?

Once Correos receives the applications, it will deliver them to the Provincial Delegations of the Electoral Census Office, which will send the applicants, as of May 8, the necessary documentation so that they can vote by mail. Voters who have requested to vote in this way should take into account that the period for depositing votes by correspondence will end on May 24, 2023.

It is essential to bear in mind that the period for depositing votes by correspondence is limited and, therefore, it is advisable not to leave the request until the last moment. In addition, it must be taken into account that, although the term ends on May 24, it is possible that the vote by mail takes several days to reach the corresponding polling station, so it is important to request and send it well in advance.

It is important to remember that the right to vote is a fundamental right and an essential form of citizen participation in a democracy. Therefore, it is important to exercise this right consciously and responsibly, choosing those political options that best represent our interests and values. Don’t miss the opportunity to make your voice heard in the upcoming elections.
