Movistar, Orange, Vodafone or Yoigo: which operator has better 5G and mobile coverage?

Once again, it is now known which operators in Spain offer a better mobile network to their customers. The latest Opensignal report, published this January 2024, shows which operator is in the lead and the rest of the competitors that are below. In this case, the companies that have been taken into account are Movistar, Orange, Vodafone and Yoigo, the four large mobile networks in our country.

In order to answer the question of which operator has the best mobile coverage and 5G connection in Spain, it is time to analyze the latest data published by Opensignal. This company is a company that acts independently to analyze the connection of the different operators in each country in order to know what the mobile experience that consumers have is.

In this latest report, the data that has been collected ranges from September 1 to November 29, 2023. Therefore, the following key points can be drawn from this analysis:

Movistar leads in Spain

To begin with, the Spanish operator Movistar is in the lead in practically all categories of this latest Opensignal study, except for two. In one of them it shares a position with Orange and in the other it remains in second place, just below the French operator. However, in other aspects, the Telefónica operator leads within the mobile networks of our country.

Within this analysis, the following points are taken into account: 5G experience, mobile coverage, consistency and General experience (video, live video, games, upload and download speed).

Well, if we start with the 5G experience, the truth is that, in each of the aspects analyzed (video, live video, games, upload and download speed), Movistar is placed in first place. For example, this is the situation in download and upload speed in 5G:

  • Movistar: 250.8 Mbps – 28.9 Mbps.
  • Orange: 175.5 Mbps – 22.5 Mbps.
  • Vodafone: 106.8 Mbps – 20.2 Mbps.
  • Yoigo: 143.1 Mbps – 20.1 Mbps.

And as for the general experience with other networks, the Telefónica operator is also the best for playing video over mobile networks. Movistar achieves 67 points (out of 100). On the other hand, Orange, Vodafone and Yoigo remain below, but very close to the Spanish operator: 64.7, 65.5 and 64 points respectively.

Finally, we must highlight Orange’s victory within the mobile coverage category: 99.0% time throughout the country and 16.9% in 5G. In general coverage availability, Movistar wins alongside the French operator, while in the 5G availability category in Spain it remains in second place with 15.7%.

What have they improved over time?

Once the current situation of mobile networks is taken into account, it is clear that Movistar is in the lead, followed by Orange. Now, compared to the last report, overall download speeds in Spain have increased. For example, Movistar’s speed increased by 4.1 Mbps, Orange’s by 3.7 Mbps, Vodafone’s by 1.2 Mbps and Yoigo’s has improved by 0.9 Mbps. And in the case of drops in 5G too, with Movistar being the one that improved the most with 55.3 Mbps.

In addition to this, Movistar, Vodafone and Orange have expanded their 5G infrastructure in our country over time. In the lead is Movistar, which has increased by 112%, adding 3,269 3.6 GHz sites and 2,553 700 MHz sites (it has a total of 10,993 5G cell sites). Orange expanded by 53% with a total of 9,435 sites and Vodafone increased by 61%, with a total of 6,012 sites in January 2024.
