When can you sleep in the car and when can’t you? We analyze what the DGT says about this practice, since it can lead to a fine of up to 200 euros.

Not everything is allowed in a car, even if it is private property. Traffic regulations must always be respected, even when the vehicle is stationary. And one of the things you can do in this situation is to sleep in the car. In this article we clarify when it can be done and when not, as specified by the DGT.

In what situations could you sleep in a car? For example, if you are very tired and there is no one to relieve you at the wheel, you can try to rest a little to avoid fatigue and inattention while driving. Also if you have ingested alcoholic beverages, which can help you reduce your blood alcohol level before getting behind the wheel legally and safely.

It is important to always drive in perfect physical and mental condition. This will not only allow you to concentrate on driving and avoid possible distractions behind the wheel, but it will also mean a safer journey and reduce the possibility of having a traffic accident.

So can you sleep in the car? The answer is yes. The General Directorate of Traffic does not prohibit it, but you must meet a series of requirements to do it correctly and, above all, to avoid doing it improperly. In addition, you can avoid a fine of up to 200 euros if you do it right.

If you are going to sleep in the car, do it in the back seats or in the front seats, where it is easier for you to fall asleep. And, to avoid legal problems, follow these recommendations:

  • The car must be properly parked at all times in an area allowed for parking.
  • You must have the car documentation in order, with the valid ITV and compulsory insurance.
  • It is not allowed to use elements on the outside of the vehicle, such as awnings, stalls or leveling devices that are placed on the outside of the car. In caravans and motorhomes, in addition, the windows cannot be opened if they protrude from the width and length of the vehicle, such as skylight-type windows.

The last point is the difference between spending the night in a camping car. Camping is not allowed in the middle of the street, but in places enabled for it, such as campsites.

The fine if you skip this regulation is about 200 euros, depending on the severity. It can reach 5,000 euros if you park to sleep in the car in protected spaces such as a national park.
