Four cylinders in the Porsche Macan? It sounds boring? The Speedart preparer makes the basic model accelerate your pulsations

The basic model of the Porsche Macan is anything but sporty. Zuffenhausen’s best-selling SUV is the cheapest entry into the Porsche world, you have to pay just over 65,000 euros. But forget about the biturbo V6 with 400 hp and more.

The brand implanted the engine of the current Golf GTI under the hood. That EA888 Evo4 that is used in so many models. And what an eye, we love it. But of course, we are talking about a whole Porsche. In the Macan, the two-liter delivers 265 hp; they have to deal with 1.9 tons, so there is not much to spare.

And this is confirmed by the 6.2 seconds from 0 to 100 and the top 232 km/h. They are not bad benefits, but neither to get excited. And the sound… not what you expect from a Porsche.

Björn Striening, the head of the preparation firm Speedart, also thought so: “Of course people prefer the V6. But for that reason it was a greater challenge to give the base model more sportiness. Especially since the engine is not a territory new to us.” So it was relatively easy for them to get 310bhp out of the GTI’s engine with new software.

So that the extra power is also acoustically recognizable, Striening has screwed a thick sports exhaust system under the rear. And for styling and cornering efficiency, a set of 21-inch wheels, coil springs and a new roof spoiler.

Behavior of the Macan Speedart

On paper, all good. And on the asphalt? Well, this vitaminized four-cylinder Macan is sportier than expected.

For the first few kilometres, Continental’s 265 and 295 tyres, together with the chassis, offer a lot of cornering fun. Rear-priority four-wheel drive always ensures sufficient grip. And the good news: despite the 50-millimeter height reduction, it maintains a margin of comfort. Incredibly poised, no rocking, it’s still comfortable.

And the 310 CV are noticeable: although the chassis would shine even more with more power, it pushes vehemently and all accompanied by a sound capable of making your hair stand on end.

And the 7-speed dual-clutch transmission does a good job, ultra-fast, precise, always inserted with maximum precision. The 100 km/h reaches them much earlier, 5.6 seconds instead of the 6.2 of series.

Factors to decide the purchase

Is it worth the increase in performance for about 1,300 euros more? Definitely yes. The four-cylinder is fun, it moves the 1.9 tons much more easily and with the Speedart look it looks like a GTS. The alternative? 10,000 euros more for an S for a few tenths faster. And in terms of sound, it is not inferior to the V6 models.
