The report on the share of mobile lines covered by telephone companies within the telecommunications sector for the month of September has just been presented and an unexpected surprise has emerged: Vodafone is once again in second position. In this way, the red company has taken Orange’s position, sneaking in a minimal number of customers. The different percentages of fiber and mobile market shares in the telco sector have also been disseminated. If you want what position Movistar and the rest of the companies are in, we invite you to read this article.

The National Commission of Markets and Competition (CNMC) has made public a document that certifies the total profits of mobile lines achieved by telephone operators during the month of September, with a record of 258,652 reaching 59.2 million (3.1% more than a year ago), forming a market share of 71.1%.

According to the report, Vodafone seems to have resurfaced after its purchase by Zegona Communications when it was in a rather delicate moment. The British operator has anticipated the Orange-MásMóvil merger operation to redirect its path in Spain and recover the market share that it had lost in the last 8 years, even pursued by the possible disappearance of its brand in Spanish territory.

Vodafone regains second place

Vodafone has surpassed Orange by very little in mobile telephone lines. In fact, they have the same number of active mobile lines, but by 0.05% second place has been awarded to the red operator. Specifically, Vodafone concentrates 22% of mobile lines in Spain, while Orange has 21.95%, according to the report published by the CNMC. On the other hand, it can be seen that Movistar remains in first place with 27.17%, well above its rivals. Finally, Grupo MásMóvil accounts for 20.89% and the rest of the OMV companies (virtual mobile operators) represent the remaining 7.99%.

And the landline market?

Orange and Vodafone are positioned at the top of the table with a total registration of 73.9% of broadband lines, despite the fact that the British telephone company has had a setback of 2,300 fewer fixed lines in the month of September , surpassed by the OMVs, Grupo MásMóvil, Movistar and Orange.

For its part, fiber optic lines represented a monthly increase of more than 128,139 lines and 1.1 million more than in September 2022. They thus reached 14.6 million FTTH lines to the home. 36.2% of the total FTTH lines belong to Movistar, which has a fleet of 5.3 million lines.

However, as soon as the merger between Orange and MásMóvil is authorized, this conglomerate will become the joint venture with the largest number of clients nationwide and Movistar will move to second place even though it will continue to be the largest operator in billing. In this way, this operation will displace Vodafone to third place, followed by Digi, which will occupy fourth place along with the incentive of having received profits or remedies after the large meltdown.
