Quadricycles, sports, commercial, utility… Of all the new cars marketed in 2022 (and their versions), these are some of the most interesting in terms of appearance, build quality, performance, practicality… Which ones would you include?
They still have a lot of competition among plug-in hybrids because they share the Zero label with them. But here we are going to talk about the electric vehicles -100% plug-in- that have appeared this year that we left behind, although in 2021 we already talked about them. Here is a selection of the 10 best electric cars that have been put up for sale in 2022.
As you can see, there is a bit of everything, although we have decided to eliminate those models that are more electrical in nature than zero emissions, that is, even if they are motors that work with current, you have to refuel with gasoline (and it is something like autonomy extended or, directly, hybrid cars to use HEV type) or any other element, such as hydrogen.
And after this screening, we also have to warn you that this is a selection of new cars susceptible to being enlarged or reduced, whose members could fit into categories such as SUVs, microcars, urban, utility, compact, sports… and even commercial electrical. We go with them!
1 Cupra Born e-Boost. It is a Spanish electric car that practically everyone has been liking since its launch, for being a very attractive sporty urbanite that enters through the eyes, with a successful range of colors, aggressive shapes, good dynamic behavior, reasonable prices…
…And, why not say it, because this Cupra beats the VW ID.3 -on which it is based- in elements as important as the ‘look’, the equipment and the PVP. But it is also that, in 2022, it has arrived in its e-Boost version (you have the Cupra Born test here), with much better features, so that this ‘little candy’ designed and projected in Martorell (Barcelona) is much more appealing.
2 BMW iX. BMW has been one of the large firms that have been pioneers in creating electric models starting from scratch, that is, without ‘limiting itself’ to adapting electric motors to other combustion vehicles. And so, ‘i’ began its journey with the BMW i3 in 2013 and today, that initial has become a second brand within the group.
More recently, but in a premium SUV format, the Munich firm intends to offer the BMW iX, the most luxurious vehicle in its electric car catalogue, with a very personal appearance and careful manufacturing defined by sustainable materials, in versions xDrive40 and xDrive50.
3 Mercedes EQA. If ‘i’ is already associated with electric BMWs or ‘ID.’ It is the second VW brand for its 100% plug-in models, Mercedes-Benz has done the same with all the ones you see that start with ‘EQ’. So, within the electrified cars that deserve a place on this list we include, for example, the EQA.
It is the most affordable electric star and closer to crossovers than SUVs. We had the chance to drive it for the first time last year, but in 2022 we have not only tested it more thoroughly, but it has come with the last name 250+, and a much greater official range, of 530 kilometers.
4 Polestar 2. The Polestar offer (owned by Volvo and the Chinese giant Geely in equal parts) is the replica for powerful German premium brands like the ones we have seen in previous lines, with design, simplicity and electrical technology as the main components of a own identity.
We have already tested, for example, of the three possible versions available, the Polestar 2 Dual Motor Performance, with the maximum power at your disposal, thanks to its two electric motors and its all-wheel drive, with no less than 476 CV. As we already told you months ago, an SUV called ‘3’ and a ‘5’ will come in 2023, which will appear in 2024 and will be a kind of GT.
5 Kia EV6 GT. The most powerful version of the Kia EV6 (not to be confused with the ‘GT Line’ sports finishes) we had the opportunity to taste it in Germany a few months ago, both as co-drivers when it was still a prototype, and behind the wheel, with an even more spectacular look than the which already had its own EV6 on which it is based.
This authentic Gran Turismo takes over from the Kia Stinger as the most emblematic model and, furthermore, the most powerful in the history of the Korean brand, thanks to its 585 CV. And thanks to the fact that it is capable of accelerating from a standstill to 100 km/h in 3.5 seconds, it is the fastest model in the Kia range and in the Hyundai Group itself.
6 Renault Megane E-Tech. Renault is changing from top to bottom, from its global strategy in the Group alliance to the technology it offers in its cars and even the logo itself. Precisely, the return to the striped diamond debuts in the new Mégane, which also changes from pure compact to compact with crossover airs.
Renault’s new electric car boasts of being a car and a ‘package’ of associated services in which on four wheels you have a not inconsiderable range of up to 470 kilometers, provided by its 220 hp engine, in addition to its new OpenR multimedia system. Link developed by Google, for example.
7 Fiat 500e Prima by Bocelli. The 500 has been an icon ever since a new urban vehicle with the latest technology was launched at the beginning of the 21st century but with all the aesthetic charm of the original, from the nuova Cinquecento of the 1950s. But the best thing is that it also There is a 100% plug-in motor.
In 2022, in addition, we attended a concert by Andrea Bocelli in Turin in which the Italian singer performed alongside his ‘sponsored’ version of the Fiat 500e: an 87 kW (118 hp) engine and 220 Nm of torque, a top speed of 150 km/h, 320 km of autonomy and special equipment, such as the JBL Premium Audio audio equipment calibrated by the artist or a specially sanitized glove box.
8 Xev Yoyo. Even smaller than the previous year, this year we also learned about the benefits of a very curious vehicle below the urban cars-cars, designed in Europe (Italy) but manufactured in China and which will be important for the mobility of another population group, the one who obtains the future B1 driving license.
It is about this two-seater of 2.53 meters with a power of 15 kW of power, 120 km of autonomy and 90 km/h of maximum speed. For this reason, the Xev Yoyo is, both at a performance and practical level, light years away from a light quad to use, with a yellow license plate… but it cannot be carried only with the driving license, for example, of a Citroën ME.
9 Ford E-Transit. And from the smallest to the largest in this list of the best electric cars for sale in 2022, we sneak in a commercial vehicle that is not a car as such but that deserves a place here: the umpteenth twist on the legendary Transit: the 100% plug-in version.
The engines are 135 kW (184 PS) and 400 Nm or 198 kW (269 PS) and 400 Nm. And as a good car for professional use, it is offered in a total of 25 combinations, to choose from among three available lengths, L2, L3 and L4, two heights, different chassis (single or double cab)… And load volumes that ranges from 9.5 to 15.1 cubic meters.
10 Lightyear 0. And before saying goodbye, after selecting a model with such different segments, measurements and features, we were left with an electric car that is usually refueled with a plug… but that can also be recharged with the sun! And therefore, it can be months without plugging in. We tested it as a prototype, but it is supposed to be driveable as is from the end of 2022.
Under a body with carbon fiber panels, it has a 60 kWh and 350 kg battery that powers four independent motors (one on each wheel, making it a 4×4 traction vehicle) and thus generates a combined power that is not scandalous -but Quite effective for a set of 1,575 kg- 130 kW (equivalent to 170 CV) with a total torque of 1,720 Nm.
