Apple’s warranty, as well as most computer manufacturers, does not cover liquid damage. A rule that can be applied even to those devices that are advertised as resistant to them, as is the case with the iPhone. However, until now, there weren’t many ways to prove that a Mac had been damaged by liquid, other than the remains of the liquid itself once disassembled on the computer. And not even then. In Sonoma 14.1, things are going to change.
Despite the advances that are being made in technological matters, a solution has not yet been found. sufficiently effective, and economical, in order to ensure the resistance of the vast majority of our electronic devices to liquid damage. However, it is not always easy to clearly identify liquid damage depending on which devices are not completely disassembled. In the case of the iPhone, for example, very close to the SIM we find a small sneak which helps alert technicians to this type of damage, without having to Disassemble the phone completely. Only by removing the card slot. However, Macs do not have the same system.
Recently, however, specialized media have detected a notable change with the arrival of macOS Sonoma 14.1. Which includes a background task, called “liquidddetectiond”, which allows us to provide information to technical service when our Mac has been exposed to any liquid damage. Focusing mainly on ports, the most common entry routes for this type of threats.
A system focused on analysis
When our iPhone detects liquid damage, we receive an alarm that prevents us from continuing using the device until the port in question dries completely. We also cannot, for example, charge it.
The same will not happen in the case of the Mac. Initially, this new functionality will only serve as an analysis, but the user will not find out at any time and the computer will be able to continue being used normally, contrary to what It happens with the iPhone. Therefore, it is a measure that will help dictate a more specific solution in the case of going to technical service, giving a greater amount of information to Apple in this regard.
At the moment, it is unknown if this new security measure will work for all computers that install the new update, or whose functionality will be reserved for recent ones. Mac M3 presented.
If a liquid is spilled
Apple is characterized by a Customer Service which for many users is reason enough to choose the apple company over its main competitors. Even, in some cases, having to bear a higher than average price for their devices. However, the liquid damage have always remained on the margins, not being susceptible to being covered by the three year warranty offered by the manufacturer in Spain.
When we find ourselves faced with this type of situation, the first thing we have to do is turn off the computer and stop using it for at least 24 hours. In addition to leaving it open and facing down, as if it were a book. But we must always avoid use electronic devices to dry it, like hair dryers, for example. If we cannot recover it, we will have to go to Apple’s technical service, or the company in question, to get a repair estimate.
