Sometimes, the Traffic agents of the Civil Guard carry a flag on the back of the motorcycle. The red flag means that traffic has been cut off.

It is possible that you have never come across a Traffic motorcycle carrying a flag or, perhaps, you have. It is not a common situation, but it is always good to remember the meaning of this signal to know how to react. Next, we explain what you should do if the Civil Guard shows you the red flag.

Sometimes, the Traffic agents of the Civil Guard carry a flag on the back of the motorcycle. That flag can be three colors, the same color code used to alert drivers that something is wrong on the road.

A few days ago, the DGT put users’ knowledge to the test with a test on the meaning of the green flag on a Civil Guard motorcycle, something that is very good to refresh some concepts that, in its day, we learned in the driving school, but that, with the passage of time, we forget.

Taking advantage of this, we are going to review the meaning of all the flags, especially the red one.

If you are driving and see a Traffic agent with a red flag on the motorcycle, it means that the road is temporarily closed, as stated in the General Traffic Regulations in its article 143.3.

As we have said before, these types of signs are not very common, but they can appear, for example, in the celebration of some sporting events, such as cycling, or because something has occurred that forces traffic to be cut off.

There are three types of flags:

  • Green flag: means that the road remains open after an incident has occurred (accident, breakdown…) that has forced traffic to be cut off.

  • Red flag: indicates the opposite, that is, the road is temporarily closed to traffic, as we have just explained.

  • Yellow flag: it is the one used by traffic agents to indicate to the drivers that follow them that they must exercise extreme caution in the face of the proximity of a danger.

Normally, the agents accompany the flags with other signals such as the arm raised vertically to indicate to the vehicles that they must stop or the movement up and down of the arm to request that they slow down behind them.
