The OCU publishes 7 suggestions for Low Emission Zones (ZBE)

Most make a lot of sense.

Although they already existed in large cities (such as Barcelona or Madrid), it is in 2023 when the Low Emission Zones (ZBE) will acquire great importance in Spanish mobility. All cities with more than 50,000 inhabitants will have to implement one throughout this year, something that will affect many people and the Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU) has something to say about it.

It is estimated that the measure will affect some 25 million people and given the number of doubts that exist in this regard, which often means more of a headache than help for the vast majority of drivers, the OCU has made seven proposals to facilitate its implementation.

The first is to implement wide, clear and highly visible signage at the accesses to the LEZs, since most of the penalties imposed for entering already active areas are simply due to ignorance.

The second is the construction of park-and-ride car parks on the limits of the LEZs, which are free and well connected to the center by public transport. It is something that already occurs (the one at the Islazul Shopping Center, in Madrid, is one of them).

The third is to promote sustainable mobility both through public transport and by improving the network of bike lanes, pedestrianizing streets, etc.

The fourth is one of the most striking of the proposal, since it advocates that those shells without a DGT label can access the ZBE three times a year. The idea would be to be able to do it in emergency situations or sporadically.

The fifth is another that is of interest in the automotive world and that has a certain logic, and that is that it calls for a change to be made in the environmental label system, so that vehicles are not classified by engine technology, but rather by real emissions (a current microhybrid is less polluting than a high-performance PHEV, for example).

The sixth aims to expand the aid of the Moves Plan so that it also covers second-hand cars with an ECO or ZERO label.

And the seventh and last one refers to the need to have centralized information on the main characteristics of the 149 LEZs, such as the accesses, where the dissuasive apartments are, their extension, etc.
