Pants with airbags.
Among road users, cyclists aside, motorcyclists are the second most vulnerable group: having no bodywork around makes potential injuries more serious in the event of an accident. That is why anything that adds security elements is welcome.
Helmets have reached a point of considerable evolution, equipment such as gloves, back protectors, etc., is very common and the most recent improvement has been the incorporation of airbags into jackets. Now a Norwegian company has brought the concept to pants.
It’s called Mo’cycle and it has created the first pants and jeans with a built-in airbag. Of Swedish origin, they have carried out a patronage campaign on Indiegogo, where, at the time of writing these lines, they have raised 62,397 euros, which is 623% of their initial goal. In addition, there are 25 days left to support the project, so the amount will be higher.
According to the company, studies have shown that airbags are 6 times more effective when it comes to absorbing impacts than conventional foams and protections, which is why the pants incorporate, in addition to these, several airbags: waist, tailbone , rear, front and side areas.
But how does it work? It uses a system similar to that used on jet skis: the pants are connected to the motorcycle by a cable and, when the pilot is “fired” away from it, the airbag is activated.
The company points out that, for this reason, the shorter the cable is, the sooner it will inflate, but they also comment that nothing happens if you forget to release it and get off the motorcycle, because it needs a force of at least 40 kilos to activate.
Another aspect that stands out about the system is the fact that, contrary to what happens with other garments with an airbag, it does not become useless after use: the pants deflate on their own and allow the CO2 cartridge to be changed to be used again (with the purchase includes two, but it is possible to buy more spare parts).
The pants are offered in two styles, one more fitted and one with a wider leg, so that each rider can choose the one that suits them best. In addition, you can opt for a leather-like finish or a cowboy-style one.
As we have mentioned, it is still possible to join the campaign, with a unit price of $499 until March 31. Deliveries are scheduled for the month of May.
