It is becoming less common not to trust our entertainment to one of the different streaming platforms that we can currently access. Many organized crime gangs, aware of this, try to get hold of our personal data by posing as platforms such as Netflix, DAZN or Prime Video.

Many of us subscribe to different streaming platforms to enjoy our favorite series and movies, music from our favorite artists, and even the best literature. The operation of these apps is well known to all of us: it is enough to enter the data from our card only once and, since then, the charge is made to the indicated account on a recurring basis, without us having to do anything else.

Although everything is completely automated, it is possible that in some cases some mistake and the platform send an email indicating that the charge in question could not be made. This may occur, for example, whenour credit card has expired, when we have it disabled for online payments or, simply, because it is a specific error. That is when we receive an email informing us of said problem and inviting us to enter a series of data in order to recover normality. But be careful, it could be the first step in a complex scam that could leave you without money, as the Bank of Spain has recently stated through its website.

Rush is never a good advisor

Although the easiest reaction when we receive this type of communication is fill in our details and send them without thinking too much, since in most cases they have replicated the aesthetics of emails very well to cause us enough confusion, it is always important to think twice before sending any type of information to any company.

The Bank of Spain states that behind these types of emails in many cases is a complex phishing scam that seeks to steal our personal data once we enter it into a fraudulent payment gateway that, apparently, is exactly the same as the original.

How we should act

The first thing we must keep in mind is that it is always important to carry out the relevant security checks before transfer any personal data or banking. Among the different recommendations that we can follow to check whether it is a legitimate email or not, are the following:

  • We must verify that the sender’s email and the URL you are directed to belong to the providing company. That is, to our streaming platform with which we have contracted the service.
  • In addition, you can also go to your user account to verify if, indeed, there has been a problem with the payment details that you have entered. If you have not changed your card and it has not given you any problems until now, it is strange that you begin to experience complications with only a web page.
  • In the event that you detect any detail that sets off alarms, it is important that contact the company to clear up any doubts. In the event that it is a scam, it is advisable that the company in question know so that it can alert the rest of the customers. In this way, you will reduce the chances that the scam can continue to spread as before.
