This new type of SIM card will change the way your devices connect

If you thought that all types of SIM cards had already been invented, you will be surprised because a new model has just been presented. In this case, it is a SIM card that is aimed at improving the connectivity of devices, responding to a very frequent request among users.

It is called rSIM, which stands for Resilient SIM, and has been shown in London. It comes from a collaboration between the Tele2 IoT operators and Deutsche Telekom IoT, who were looking, above all, for a way to improve connectivity in Internet of Things devices. The result is a SIM that could be well received among users of mobile phones or many other types of terminal.

Always available connection

The objective of these operators has been to collaborate to ensure that the smart devices that are connected in users’ homes never stop being online. They think about, for example, situations in which there may be a drop in service and the connection may disappear. To do this, this new SIM card technology has the ability, in the absence of connectivity, to look for an alternative to connect to so that the devices remain online.

But, of course, you may be wondering how, for example, your Smart refrigerator could look for another connection in case it loses the one that normally has it connected to the network. The secret is that this rSIM card has two independent profiles in its configuration, which is why two operators have decided to collaborate on the project. Therefore, if one of them loses connection or there is a crash, what the device will do, thanks to this SIM, is connect to the other network. Within a normal day-to-day context, it would be very rare for both operators to go down at the same time.

Other features

From what we read in the information shared with the British press, this rSIM card, which has a different use than an eSIM, is also prepared to respond to problems that may occur while we are abroad. It is obvious that, in this case, we are not talking about some of the Smart devices in the home, but rather about other terminals in which we may be using the card. Thus, a roaming system is used that allows a solution to situations in which the Internet service may be interrupted outside the country.

Users will be able to manage the use of their rSIM from a personalized administration interface. In it you can see the status of the card, the connections that have been made and the type of movements or network changes that the rSIM has made. It is important to keep in mind that, from what they say, although Tele2 IoT and Deutsche Telekom IoT will act as the main operator in the configuration of the card, there will be freedom to cover the second profile with the mobile operator that the user wants.

The main reason why it was decided to work on this type of SIM card was the Internet access cuts and service outages that have been recorded in recent years. From rSIM they specifically mention cases such as the one suffered in Australia in 2023, in which more than 10 million people were left without access to the Internet. This incident was more serious than you can imagine, since it not only affected communications or entertainment, but there was also machinery that ran out of Internet and caused many problems. In hospitals, health care centers or even transportation services, for example, a solution to this problem has been raised as a necessity.

In addition, they believe that, as more devices and technology are connected to the Internet of Things, it will be more common for incidents to occur. So they want to be prepared. Because of this, they are already talking about how this rSIM is not going to be the only advance they propose. They have a new version of it on their hands that will provide compatibility with the SGP.32 standard, which is scheduled for release in 2025.
