The compact SUV segment is one of the most competitive on the market, to the point that categories by size can be established within it. The bulk would fall within the ‘C’ as such, but the older ones are very close to the D segment. One of them is the Toyota RAV4 and these are three SUVs that want to stand up to it.
The first thing, yes, is to analyze what are the characteristics that define the new Toyota RAV4.
It is an SUV with a family approach, something that is evident in its dimensions. It has a length of 4,600 mm, a width of 1,855 mm, a height of 1,685 mm and a wheelbase of 2,690 mm. It offers an interior capacity of five seats and the trunk has a volume of 580 liters that can be increased to 1,690 liters.
It is only available with electrified mechanics, with a 222 CV conventional hybrid access version, with DGT ECO label, and with a 306 CV plug-in hybrid superior variant, with all-wheel drive and ZERO label.
The price of the Toyota RAV4 starts at 39,900 euros.
Lexus NX
The enemy at home, even if it is on the floor of premium brands. The Lexus has an almost identical size (4,660 mm in length), is a family SUV and presents an even sportier and sharper image, as is the house brand, especially on the front with its huge grille.
On a mechanical level, it is also offered with a pair of electrified versions. The access, known as 350h, is a self-recharging hybrid of 242 CV that can be associated with a front or integral wheel drive system.
Above is the 450h+, which is the first plug-in hybrid in the brand’s history. It develops 306 CV of power, has 4×4 traction, uses an 18.1 kWh battery and can travel 63 kilometers in electric mode, which is why it has a ZERO label.
Logically, having a premium approach, its price is significantly higher than that of the RAV4, starting at 53,700 euros.
Subaru Forester
Subaru’s SUV presents one of the toughest looks in the segment, with rugged off-road-inspired styling—no coincidence, as it takes a more offroad approach than most of its rivals.
Currently the brand markets it only as a hybrid, combining a 150 hp and 194 Nm gasoline engine with a small 16.7 hp and 66 Nm electric motor. It is always associated with a CVT-type automatic gearbox and an all-wheel drive system. Approves a consumption of 8.1 l/100 km.
Its price is more contained than that of the Toyota: it is available from 36,900 euros.
honda crv
Also from Japan comes its third rival, a Honda CR-V that, despite having presented and launched its new generation in many markets, in Spain continues to market the previous one, which on an aesthetic level feels somewhat outdated if it is placed next to the latest releases from Honda.
It is only available in a hybrid version, which combines a 145 hp 2.0 i-VTEC gasoline engine with a 135 kW (184 hp) electric block, allowing it to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.8 seconds. Of course, the time is that of the front-wheel drive variant, since the heavier all-wheel drive variant needs four tenths more to complete the sprint.
The Honda CR-V is available from 36,360 euros.
