The Formula 1 driver wanted to prevent his father, who leads the general classification of the rally, from having an accident.
Carlos Sainz Jr. and Carlos Sainz Sr. are closer than ever. Part of the family is in Saudi Arabia these days, closely following Sainz Sr.’s participation in the Dakar Rally, and together they are experiencing very special moments. Just yesterday, Sainz Jr. and his mother, Reyes, welcomed El Matador as he returned to camp after winning the stage.
During the stage, Sainz Jr. himself had been following his father’s progress from the organization’s helicopter. He himself recognized that he had had a hard time seeing him stopped at one point, when he suffered a flat tire at the start. Luckily, it was just a hiccup that Carlos and Lucas Cruz quickly fixed, and it didn’t stop them from achieving victory.
In the second stage, this Monday, the Spanish duo from Audi was putting together a great performance, placed among the top three positions despite opening the track after their victory yesterday. Carlos Jr. also decided to go to a point on the stage to see his father go by, and he chose a complicated, winding area full of rocks.
And this is where we saw the gesture of the Ferrari driver who will go around the world. With the aim of helping his father and preventing him from suffering a puncture or, worse still, a serious accident, Carlos climbed up a rock and began to give him instructions to slow down at that point.

These images show the involvement and respect that Carlos Jr. has for his father’s work. Until now, we had never seen Carlos Sainz Jr. in a Dakar, but this year he has decided to travel to Saudi Arabia despite the fact that it is his rest week.
“I had always wanted to come, it always caught me on very bad dates, which is the only week of the year that I had to rest and not travel. This year, as the F1 season has ended earlier, I reserved the week of the 1st of January to go to the Dakar”, said Sainz in the camp, in statements collected by MARCA.
Sainz Jr. also admitted that the Dakar is an adventure that interests him and “not just because my father is racing”. So who knows, maybe we’ll see another Sainz racing in the rally in a few years… Without a doubt, he has a good teacher at home!
