Viewing adult content in Spain changes forever in September: DNI and 30 accesses per month

The Spanish Government has been considering this new system for several months. It is an age verification system that aims to control access to adult content, especially to stop minors from accessing such content in our country.

The aim is to prevent minors from accessing the Internet and having unrestricted access to pages with adult content. To do this, they are going to implement this age verification system that everyone will have to use. As the Minister for Digital Transformation and the Civil Service has explained, it will be done through the Cartera Digital Beta application.

A new system to verify age

The Government hopes that the application, called Digital Wallet Beta, will be ready by the end of the summer. It is therefore expected to be operational by September. As for its operation, it is a mobile app that will have an age verification system. More than anything, because its intention is to restrict minors in Spain from accessing adult content.

Within this smartphone application, a credential of age issued by the Government itself will be stored securely. And this will have to be presented every time any user wants to access this type of content. However, as pointed out by the General Director of Public Governance, Carmen Cabanillas, this credential is completely anonymous, and only serves to guarantee that the user in question is of legal age.

Therefore, this credential that will be given does not contain any personal data, and for this reason each user will have a letter that identifies them as being of legal age. The purpose is that any user who intends to view adult content is actually of legal age and is not a minor.

How the app works

In order to obtain the credential in question, users must present their electronic ID or the administrative sources available. With this, once the application is installed on the mobile phone and the credential showing that they are of legal age is requested, the user will be able to enter the page with adult content. However, there are a number of limitations.

It should be noted that the adult credential can be used a maximum of three times on a platform. And the period that has been set is 30 days in order to ensure the privacy of users. Therefore, this type of digital card offers up to 30 accesses or sessions during 30 days.

On the other hand, as the Government has explained, this system would only be available on platforms that contain adult content based in Spain. However, for now, it leaves out the rest of the pages that are available on the Internet. Although, it has also been explained that other EU countries are also working on developing similar measures to control the access of minors to this content.
